The Job
This role is a specialist in the field and will join a collaborative curatorial team to support an expansive program centered on the arts of Europe within an encyclopedic museum.
They are responsible for contributing to all curatorial duties. These include researching, interpreting, and publishing works in the collection, organizing exhibitions and programs, and caring for and building the collection.
Under the direction of the Chair, they will actively foster a culture of respect and inclusion, and work with colleagues to achieve both individual and departmental goals. These include ongoing work to strengthen curatorial commitments to diversity, equity, accessibility, inclusion, and belonging (DEAIB).
This role embraces Mia’s dedication to audience engagement and lifelong learning, and it supports the museum’s mission to preserve the collection and make it accessible to the public. They will meet the highest standards of scholarship and investigation, reinforcing intellectual inquiry as a core tenant of Mia’s mission.
In this role, you will:
· Conduct specialized research of Mia’s collection and utilize connoisseurship to create engaging gallery installations.
· Propose and organize special exhibitions and gallery installations.
· Write scholarly catalogues and articles that make significant contributions to the field.
· Write gallery labels, panels, didactic materials, and online content.
· Develop the collection through strategic acquisitions.
· Build relationships with collectors, potential donors, professional colleagues, partner organizations and peer institutions, as well as the community at large, to further Mia’s strategic goals, including support of DEAIB.
· Champion scholarly and public program to promote engagement with Mia’s collection and mission.
· Assist the department chair with the management of the museum’s collection of European art, ensuring proper documentation, maintenance, display, and conservation.
- Review and update object records in the Museum database (TMS).
- Answer correspondence related to the collection and assisting the public and visiting scholars.
- Aid in the care, maintenance, and conservation of the collection in storage, on exhibition, or on loan.
- Consult with conservators on the care of the collection and documentation of the condition of works.

· Excellent computer and organizational skills to maintain precise documentation of the collection.
Specific Requirements
· Ph.D. or ABD preferred; M.A. degree required.
· Three or more years of experience with broad knowledge of European art.
· Strong record of research and scholarship, with proven experience organizing exhibitions and producing publications of high quality in a museum, academic institution, or equivalent.
· Exhibitions and program planning experience.
· Knowledge of French, German, Spanish, or other European language in subject-area expertise.
