The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) seasonal Head Lifeguards provide support for the lifeguards in day to day operations. The Head Lifeguard is a mix of traveling lifeguard, program and staff lead. The Head Lifeguard will provide assistance where needed and be a liaison to management. The Head Lifeguard should exemplify responsibility, leadership, friendly public relations/ customer service, and be a voice for the Lifeguard and Attendant staff.
- This position works between 32-40 hours per week, part- time. Varied working hours including 5:30am-9:30pm, Monday-Sunday
- Must be able to meet work schedule and in-service training attendance standards (May through August).

Lifeguard Duties:- Apply knowledge of the rules and regulations for the beach, waterpark, or pool.
- Lead or assist in aquatic programming and swim lessons.
- Maintain a proactive approach to safety and risk management by enforcing rules, scanning swimmers for distress and directing weak swimmers to remain in shallow water.
- Provide rescue and emergency first aid/CPR care when needed.
- Complete reports and forms associated with patron care and facility statistics.
- Operate and maintain all safety equipment and supplies.
- Maintain all required certifications and forward copies to Aquatics Manager.
- Perform general maintenance and janitorial duties in order to maintain an orderly, friendly, clean and safe environment.
- Attend all required in-service trainings held from May through August.
- Oversee Aquatic instructional programming.
- Know and understand water safety and swimming skill levels and the skills that are taught.
- Teach instruction to participants ranging in age from infants to adults and with different ability levels.
- Know and understand each lesson curriculum and effective teaching strategies.
- Practice and teach basic water safety.
- Work effectively with other lifeguards/instructors and take turns with various responsibilities.
- Learn and implement the proper procedures to use equipment and to open and close facility.
- Exemplify responsibility, leadership, friendly public relations/ customer service, and be a voice for the lifeguard staff.
- Provide supervision and scheduling for aquatics staff.
- Communicate issues, concerns, incidents, and/ or safety risks in a timely manner.
- Oversee incident/accident reports; file with the appropriate manager.
- Conduct regular staff in-services.
- Monitor first-aid supplies and equipment distribution.
- Document daily site attendance.
- Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.
- Supervisory or leadership experience.
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard/ First Aid/ CPR/ AED Certification.
- Current LGI certification and experience lifeguarding at a pool, beach, or waterpark.
- Ability to remain calm and make appropriate decisions in emergency situations.
- Good cross cultural communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse population.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal.
- Ability to effectively communicate in both one on one and group settings.
- Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.
- Must be able to meet work schedule and in-service training attendance standards (May through August).
