The MPRB is seeking a diligent and committed full-time, year-round lifeguard to perform lifeguarding duties, aquatic program instruction, and provides direction to seasonal Lifeguards that is consistent with MPRB mission, values, goals, and comprehensive plan. - Responsible for performing Lifeguard duties in alignment with the American Red Cross Lifeguard/ First- Aid/ CPR/ AED standards and facility guidelines.
- Assist in leading in a variety of aquatic programming and swim lessons.
- Effectively maintain a proactive approach to water safety and risk management by enforcing rules, scanning swimmers for distress and directing weak swimmers to remain in shallow water.
- Effectively and in a timely manner operate and maintain all safety equipment and supplies.
- Assist in structuring and setting up programs and events.
- Teach swim instruction to participants ranging in age from infants to adults and with different ability levels in an inclusive environment.
- Effectively practice and teach basic water safety.
- Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.
- High School degree (GED).
- Lifeguarding experience: at least twelve (12) months or four (4) summer seasons.
- Increasingly responsible experience leading swim lesson and other aquatic programs: at least six (6) months or two (2) summer seasons.
- Increasing responsible experience in an aquatic lead role: at least six (6) months or two (2) summer seasons.
- College or university credits in Recreation Administration, Physical Education or closely related field.
- Experience administering aquatic and special event programs.
- Lifeguard Instructor.
- Water Safety Instructor.
- Valid driver's license.
- American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard/ First-Aid/ CPR/ AED (Or ability to be Recertified within 60 days of hire).
- Knowledge of contemporary operations of aquatic facilities, operations, safety and maintenance best practices.
- Knowledge of preventative lifeguarding techniques that represent best practices.
- Knowledge of contemporary aquatic programming.
- Knowledge of swim lesson instruction best practices.
- Knowledge of contemporary aquatic program and event production.
- Knowledge of modern principles and best practices for working with youth and adults.
- Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.

What steps the selection process involves:
- We review your minimum qualifications.
- We rate your training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (30%).
- We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
- We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above). Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
- We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
- References, including verification of employment and work performance, may be considered.
- We conduct a background check. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.
