SUMMARY: 
Seeking a skilled Mechanic to perform mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on a wide variety of the Park Board's fleet of vehicles and equipment (including commercial motor vehicles). Skilled work includes, but not limited to: electrical systems, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, transmissions, and gas/diesel engines.  Mechanic performs work in a timely manner to ensure safe, economical, efficient and timely equipment operation and longevity.

The Equipment Shop operates with Mechanics working in two shifts. Employees are assigned to work day shift hours (7:00AM- 3:30PM, Monday- Friday) or night shift hours (3:00PM- 11:30PM, Monday- Friday)  based on seniority.  Current vacancies are for one day shift Mechanic (7:00AM- 3:30PM) and one night shift Mechanic (3:00PM- 11:30PM), Monday through Friday.  

Auto Mechanic (Day): $37.12- $41.78 per hour (wage level based on ASE certifications)
Auto Mechanic (Night): $39.15- $43.81 per hour (wage level based on ASE certifications)

  • Perform detailed preventive maintenance to complex systems by following service manuals, established maintenance schedules and procedures on small equipment, attachments, vehicles, and light and heavy duty trucks and equipment. 
  • Perform failure diagnosis and repairs to complex systems using, diagnostic equipment and procedures on medium duty and heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Perform emergency and planned repairs which are sometimes outside and in remote locations.
  • Perform setup and decommissioning of new and old vehicles and equipment.
  • Document and records all repairs and parts used using the fleet management information system. 
  • Perform State & regulated inspections, test and operation to ensure safe and proper operation on all MPRB vehicles, trucks and equipment. 
  • Use diagnostic tools related to light and heavy vehicles. For example, Snap-on Pro link or Solus, Ford Rotunda, Cummins Insite. 
  • Perform related work as assigned.
  • Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.
Need to Have: 
  • Successful completion of an 18 to 24 month vocational-technical program in vehicle maintenance/repair or equivalent.
  • Three years of Automobile, Heavy Truck or Equipment repair experience, which has included one year with medium or heavy-duty vehicles and diesel engines.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with airbrake endorsement (Within 6 Months of Hire)
    • NOTE:  CDL is needed for when an auto mechanic needs to test drive, inspect, service or condition a commercial motor vehicle.  Auto mechanics may also be called out to attend to a commercial motor vehicle that is disabled and needs diagnosis and report.
  • Forklift Certification Required (Within 6 months of hire)
Nice to Have: 
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification preferred.
  • Certification to perform DOT inspections preferred.
  • Welder certification preferred.

  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle as incumbents are subject to local travel to and from work locations.  Operating or utilizing equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements.  The ability to remain in a sitting or standing position for extended periods of time.
  • The incumbent may be required to traverse on wet and slippery surfaces and to ascend and descend ladders to access work areas.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals, temperature changes, loud noises, gas and diesel fumes and more.  Work performed in an equipment shop environment.
Skills Crucial to Success in This Role: 
  • Contemporary best practices on vehicle and small engine repair, which includes gas, diesel, heavy-duty vehicles, Police vehicles, golf course equipment and/or construction equipment.
  • Working knowledge of electronic or computerized test equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical problems.
  • Develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships; ability to work independently and in a team environment and adapt to changing conditions and situations. 
  • Understand and follow work rules, policies and procedures.
  • Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.

Selection Process:

What steps the selection process involves:

  • We rate your training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (30%).
  • We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
  • We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above).  Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
  • We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
  • References, including verification of employment and work performance, may be considered. 
  • We conduct a background check.  Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.   • Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, applicant will also need to successfully pass a pre-employment DOT physical examination and drug & alcohol test with work simulation paid for by the MPRB.
  • Applicant will be asked to consent to MPRB conducting a full query of the driver’s Clearinghouse record as required by the FMCSA.
