ENGAGEMENT SUMMARY

The Exhibit Designer is a key part of our experience team. Working with exhibit development, graphic design, exhibit production and props specialists, the exhibit designer is responsible for creating three-dimensional exhibit environments that are interactive, engaging, and in alignment with the museum's learning framework. This position has no direct supervisory responsibility.

Hybrid eligible position. This position will be expected to be on-site at the museum 2-3 days per week, depending on project schedules.


REPORTS TO: Senior Exhibit Designer

ANNUAL SALARY: $70,000 plus full benefits

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, Salaried & Exempt


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Design creative, interactive and educational exhibit environments for children ages birth-10 years old and their families. This includes:


Working with exhibit developers to define exhibit themes, subject matter and content

  • Translating concepts into three-dimensional exhibit environments with interactive components and activities that engage a variety of learning styles and are developmentally appropriate
  • Working with the exhibit developer and the graphic designer to locate and accommodate graphics
  • Assuring exhibit components are durable, meet accessibility requirements, address visitor comfort and safety, comply with fire regulations, and accommodate maintenance needs.


Create sketches, floor plans, concept drawings, and renderings at all phases of design to help stakeholders see and understand the exhibit plan

  • Present concepts to various audiences, in order to communicate key exhibit intentions, facilitate team dialogue, and drive discussions and decision-making
  • Revise and modify exhibit designs in response to internal feedback and budget estimates

Produce documents for fabrication, and consult during the fabrication process

  • Create construction documents, elevations and renderings for internal production teams and/or external vendors
  • Specify all materials and design choices, such as color schemes and paint colors
  • Participate in meetings with vendors and contractors, providing information as needed
  • Assist with troubleshooting during the fabrication phase, creating additional drawings or references as needed

Assist with materials for traveling exhibits

  • Create cart-packing plan for new traveling exhibits
  • Create base floorplans for installation
  • Assist with any materials needed for the manual

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (HIGHLIGHT EACH ONE IN COVER LETTER AND RESUME)

  • Six years of combined education/training/certification and work experience in Exhibit Design, Graphic Design, Environmental Design, Architecture or Industrial Design.
  • Minimum 3 years of design experience using CAD software.
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and produce unique results.
  • Ability to provide a portfolio of work as part of the application process.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Previous experience designing exhibits
  • Ability to manage multiple, overlapping projects
  • Experience or ability to design interactive experiences for children
  • Experience and/or ability to design and produce prototypes for short-term audience testing
  • Experience designing and producing exhibit graphics
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, design needs unique to traveling exhibits

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Screening by Talent Resources (will be a phone interview or written questions)
  • First and second round interviews will be held at the museum with an opportunity to meet a variety of colleagues.
