What are the responsibilities and job description for the Payroll Technician - Accounting Technician position at Minnesota Department of Corrections?

The functions assigned to the Payroll Specialist are within the DOC Financial Operations, payroll department. This individual is part of the payroll team which consists of functional experts who provide technical and administrative support to employees who work at The DOC ensuring employees accurately record time worked, leave taken, and that they are paid timely and accurately.
This individual may also be responsible for reviewing and processing reimbursement of claims submitted DOC employees for travel expenses incurred while on state business, ensuring reporting follows State of Minnesota, Minnesota Management and Budgets (MMB) and DCT travel policies and procedures, as well as labor agreements and compensation plans.
Minimum Qualifications

Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.
New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

- Customer service experience working in a business-to-business environment sufficient to interact effectively with individuals having differing backgrounds to provide prompt, courteous and accurate information on the phone and through e-mail.
- Data Entry skills with the ability to multi-task to process a high volume of employee time records and expense reports in a timely, accurate manner, ensuring entry is completed by deadlines.
- Database management skills sufficient to navigate and utilize multiple database systems and software applications.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and SharePoint.
- Math skills sufficient to calculate, review, and reconcile financial data.
- Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy along with good organizational skills.
The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:
- Experience processing employee payroll for large (150 or more employees) governmental agency or large organization
- Experience and knowledge of SEMA4 (Statewide Employee Management Payroll) or other similar databases for processing payroll and/or reimbursements of travel expenses
