The DNR is currently seeking a General Repair Worker in Roseau, MN. This position exists to repair and maintain vehicles, facilities, equipment, and buildings at the Roseau River Wildlife Management Area., work on wildlife habitat development and maintenance projects, and assist with other wildlife management activities as assigned.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain and repair machinery and equipment commonly used within the Roseau River Wildlife Management work area.
  • Operate available equipment, machinery, and tools to carry out wildlife habitat and facilities projects.
  • Maintain buildings and facilities so that their condition is preserved, and operational needs of the unit are met.
  • Assume overall responsibility for the unit's repair shop, tools, supplies, fuels, and lubricants so that equipment and vehicles are properly maintained.

This position requires occasionally transporting items of up to 50-pounds maximum (e.g. bags of seed) and frequently transporting objects such as heavy tools, backpacks, field equipment, and file boxes. This job also requires moving to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve maintaining a stationary position most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Position requires a Class A Driver's License (CDL), passing a pre-employment drug screen and participation in the DNR ongoing random screening program. Otherwise qualified applicants who do not have a valid Class A will be allowed up to six (6) months to acquire one, as a condition of employment. Employees who are required to retain this license will be included in the DNR Drug and Alcohol Plan. This will require the employee to be pre-employment drug tested and be included in a random drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintenance and repair procedures for diagnosing and/or repairing a variety of small engines, diesel engines, tractors, recreational vehicles, farm implements, and heavy equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience in methods and practices related to mechanical, welding, or carpentry trades.
  • Skills in the operation of heavy equipment, farm equipment, vehicles, power tools, and hand tools sufficient to carry out a variety of land management tasks.
  • Ability to manage preventative maintenance schedules of equipment, track inventory of supplies, parts, and safety equipment, conduct safety inspections of buildings, maintain current logs of vehicle and fuel use, etc.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions sufficient to carry out work orders and understand equipment operation specifications.
  • Communication skills sufficient to instruct others in the use of the shop, tools, and equipment and ordering parts and supplies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current possession of a valid Class B or Class A Driver’s License.
  • Carpentry experience, including but not limited to replace door handles, build wood duck nest boxes, replace caulking/sealant around windows, build holders for informational brochures, maps, etc., shingle a shed, repair a rain gutter, etc.
  • Verifiable equipment operation experience (200 hours) on at least 4 of the following:
    • Heavy truck/trailer
    • Front-end loader
    • Backhoe/tracked excavator
    • Dozer
    • Agricultural tractor
    • Muskeg tracked ATV (or equivalent)
    • Skidsteer
  • One (1) year of experience in conducting prescribed fires and/or suppression of wildfires.

Additional Requirements

This position requires current possession of a valid Class A license or the ability to obtain one in the first 6 months of employment. The selected applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen and will be included in the ongoing DNR random drug and alcohol test program.
