This position will work as part of the team that designs the MnDOT Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) / Traffic Management System (TMS) network which monitors and gathers traffic data (using cameras, loops, detection, etc.) and provides the traveling public with the information necessary to help them make informed decisions (using dynamic message signs, 511, etc.) on major state highways.
This position exists to prepare plans, quantities, and cost estimates in the design of the freeway traffic management system electronic network. Design and provide network fiber schematic documentation showing fiber optic management of splicing, termination, and equipment layout/connectivity for construction plans and for internal records for maintenance and future projects. Assists in providing documentation necessary for environmental processes related to ITS projects.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.
This position is located at Waters Edge in Roseville. The position will be required to work in the office full-time to begin with, then will have the option to telework on a hybrid schedule. If working a hybrid schedule, the incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

- One (1) year of professional (e.g., MAPE 05L or higher) experience; OR
- Two (2) years of advanced clerical (e.g., Office & Admin Specialist Intermediate or higher) experience; OR
- Two (2) years of technical experience (e.g., Student Worker Paraprofessional (Sr.), Transp Generalist Senior, Transp Specialist)
- Knowledge of CAD-based design software (Microstation or OpenRoads preferred).
- Knowledge of preparing plans in the design of the freeway traffic management system electronic network.
- Knowledge of project plan preparation procedures sufficient to meet project deadlines.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word sufficient to create/modify cost estimate spreadsheets and basic word documents.
- Note: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering substitutes for one year of professional experience.
- Experience using Microstation or OpenRoads.
- Experience using GIS Software
- Knowledge of Ethernet-based network communications equipment.
- Knowledge of ESRI ArcMap, GIS databases and 3GIS Fiber Network Management Software.
- Knowledge of Intelligent Transportation System/Transportation Management System (TMS) systems including closed circuit TV cameras, control cabinets, dynamic message signs and vehicle detection systems sufficient to identify key TMS elements and create a plan to address impacts from construction projects.
- Ability to read and understand past ITS construction plans and read/review proposed TMS construction plans from outstate MnDOT Districts and consultants statewide.
