This position locates all underground electrical, electronic and communication facilities owned and maintained by MnDOT per Gopher State One Call requests and internal agency requests. Additional duties include:

  • Maintaining and updating files of field prints and wiring diagrams.
  • Providing backup to ensure that locate tickets and traffic signal malfunctions are handled in a timely manner.
  • Installing filters in fiber optic vaults and cabinets for the Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC) fiber optic line management system.

This position is exempt from snow and ice duties. This position works outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of experience performing underground electrical utility locates responding to Gopher State One Call System, OR
  • One year of experience performing underground electrical utility locates AND a combination of one year of experience in any of the following areas: bridge maintenance, bridge safety inspection, contract administration, roadway and/or bridge construction, design, hydraulics, materials, soils, permits planning, pre-design, right of way, road surface/roadside maintenance, and signs, surveys, snow/ice, and/or traffic engineering, etc.

AND

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

A valid class D driver’s license.

Two-year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four-year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. For education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts.

  • Utility locating experience.

Physical Requirements

A pre-placement physical examination is required for this position. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into a different functional work area will be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam for the area they are moving into. The scope of the physical exam will be limited to whether the employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in compliance with state and federal law.
