The Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metro District is hiring 30 temporary, full-time, Laborer General positions to be a part of our Transportation Associate Pathways Program (TAPP). This training program is anticipated to last up to 12 months and is designed to provide participants an opportunity to learn and develop specialized skills, such as performing routine equipment maintenance (calibrate, set up and adjust equipment, etc.), using basic hand tools, performing roadside/roadway maintenance activities (vegetation control, pothole patching, guardrail repair, etc.), operating maintenance vehicles, using computers for data entry, mobile/two-way radio system, along with training, studying and obtaining a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Permit and a tanker endorsement.

TAPP Participants will be split into two work groups (days/nights) and will rotate work shifts halfway through the program to ensure all participants receive the necessary training and exposure to the various maintenance activities. Sufficient notice will be provided to all participants when changing work schedules.

The program goals is to provide participants an opportunity to advance their career with MnDOT, Metro District Maintenance by opening internal permanent Transportation Associate positions to apply for, prior to the end of the 12-month temporary appointment. A Maintenance Transportation Associate will perform roadside/roadway maintenance work along with snow and ice removal responsibilities. The Transportation Associate position requires a Class A CDL Permit and a tanker endorsement, with the requirement to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License prior to the end of the 12-month probationary period.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Read, write, speak, and understand the English language sufficient to understand oral and/or written direction; communicate with employees and the general public in person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices.
  • Solve basic math problems.
  • Maintain routine written logs and simple records.
  • Perform manual labor work sufficient to complete assignments.
  • Endure extreme environmental conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older by June 4, 2025.

Required License:

  • A valid class D driver's license with driving experience and a good driving record.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this job will vary but typically requires lifting 50-70 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling, and climbing. Vision, hearing, and operating skills are needed. This job will require safe operation of MnDOT equipment throughout the Metro District, such as a one-ton pickup with trailer and a variety of small engine maintenance equipment. Weather elements: May require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) daily); working in high volume traffic zones.

Additional Requirements

All job offers are contingent upon the candidate possessing a valid driver's license at the required level, passing a driver's license screening, criminal background check, SEMA4 records check, physical exam, employment verification and reference checks. A revoked, suspended, or canceled driver's license within the last five (5) years or three (3) serious traffic violations during any 12-month period will disqualify a candidate. The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and MUST be able to report to work within ONE (1) HOUR of being called.
