What are the responsibilities and job description for the Education and Interpretative Specialist position at Minnesota Discovery Center?
Major Objectives:
Responsible for administrative duties including planning, organizing, ordering, implementing, and delivering dynamic educational, interpretive, and/or recreational programs for the MDC’s Museum, Heritage Park, Staff in the Classroom Program, recreational/interpretive tours, and Glen Location that creates an exciting visitor experience for MDC’s patrons. Responsible to assist in implementing creative programming that compliments, not supplements, school curriculum.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, history, public history, museum studies, anthropology, outdoor recreation, forestry, or related fields preferred
- Preferred 1 years interpretive experience
- 1 years administrative experience
- Knowledge of professional museum practices, interpretive skills, and/or outdoor recreation preferred
- Excellent written, oral communication, presentation, and public speaking skills
- Preferred CPR/First Aid certified
- Experience with Microsoft Office products including Teams
Responsibilities:
- Assist with development of educational, interpretive, and recreational content, opportunities, and training materials in line with state/national curriculum
- Works with Education, Program, and Recreation Manager to establish program schedules, directions, and priorities
- Schedule museum staff, volunteers, and visitor service staff to assist in museum educational, interpretive, and recreational activities
- Assist in financial budgeting for purchasing supplies and event/program planning
- Research and purchase supplies, computer software, and outdoor equipment for programs
- Ability to work with digital image capture equipment to create content for on-line social media platforms and virtual tours
- Lead educational, interpretive, and recreation tours both indoors and outdoors in 4-season environments
- Ability to work with both children and adults
- Recruit and schedule demonstrators
- Foster positive relationships with co-workers and work effectively in a team culture
- Other duties as assigned
Working conditions:
- General office environment, physical outdoor tasks, water recreation and diverse landscape activity spaces, public speaking
- May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time
- May need to work both indoors and outdoors during 4 seasons
