JOB TITLE : Public Historian
LOCATION : History Center - 345 W Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55102
COMPENSATION : Typical starting range $57,366.40 - $61,776.00 annually
STATUS & HOURS : Full-time, regular (approximately 2,080 annual hours) position.
BENEFITS : Eligible to participate in State Employee Group Insurance Program and a retirement program with employer contribution. Generous vacation and sick time accruals with additional paid holidays.

DESCRIPTION : This position exists to produce rigorously researched historical narratives and provide historical expertise in support of MNHS’s interpretation across the institution. This position serves as an internal and external resource in relation to historical content and historical methodology for internal and external audiences.
SUMMARY OF WORK : 1) Provide research, content and context development, and interpretation expertise to MNHS exhibit, collections, program development teams, and other MNHS staff as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Master’s degree in history with expertise in one or more of the following fields : US, Midwest, urban / suburban, economic, Native American, borderlands, settler-colonialism, military, women and gender, African American, Latine, LGBTQIA , environment, or equivalent field.
Three years experience working in public history, program delivery, or program development, or equivalent.
Knowledge of history research methodology and data gathering techniques, including ability to conduct original research in primary source collections.
Demonstrated ability to synthesize research findings into coherent themes and narratives.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to write clearly and concisely and effective oral communication with individuals and groups adjusting the presentation based on the audience.
Proven customer service skills in order to work effectively with a diverse public, including but not limited to : children, teachers, senior citizens, people with disabilities, persons of different ethnic or cultural background, people of color, and professionals.
Demonstrated ability to think imaginatively and problem solve.
Demonstrated ability to multitask, work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines, prioritize and adapt to changing priorities.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and take individual initiative while also being able to collaborate effectively and contribute positively in a team environment.
Ability to efficiently use Microsoft Office software, i.e. Word, Excel, and Google applications.
Computer skills necessary to develop quality materials and activities.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS :
PhD degree in history with expertise in one or more of the following fields : US, Midwest, urban / suburban, economic, Native American, military, women and gender, borderlands, settler-colonialism, African American, Latine, LGBTQIA , environment, or equivalent field.
Experience delivering interpretive programs to diverse audiences.
General knowledge of Minnesota and United States history.
Familiarity with Minnesota Historical Society interpretive programs, including K-12 programs, exhibits, and / or other initiatives.
