Expand your legal career as a Staff Attorney! The Sixth Judicial District seeks qualified candidates to fill a Staff Attorney position located in the St. Louis County Courthouse in Duluth, Minnesota. This position is in the Judicial Trial Court Staff Attorney classification.
The Staff Attorney will provide professional legal support to the Sixth Judicial District. Staff Attorneys conduct legal research and analysis, provide legal advice and recommendations to judges, referees, and law clerks regarding cases, and are responsible for developing and providing training to law clerks. Work requires the regular use of professional legal principles and practices, statutes, case law, trial court rules and procedures, and judicial branch policies and procedures to complete assignments.
What You Will Do
The following are examples of major job duties expected for this position to perform (any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed):
- Performs complex legal research and analysis, and provides advice and recommendations to judges, referees, and law clerks.
- Drafts, reviews, and edits legal documents.
- Maintains knowledge of policies, procedures, rules, statutes, and case law for work product and to provide guidance to judges, referees, and law clerks.
- Receives and responds to questions from judges, referees, law clerks, court staff, justice partners, and the public regarding trial court procedures, cases, and records.
- Develops and provides training to law clerks.
- Collaborates on statewide initiatives and projects.
- Serves as judicial expert for digital accessibility.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in an office setting.
What You Must Have
- Possession of a law degree from an accredited college or university and two to three years of experience as an attorney in private or public practice or two years of law clerk experience in a private or public legal setting.
- Possession of a current Certificate of Admission to the Bar of the State of Minnesota.

What You Will Earn
The anticipated starting hourly rate for this position is no less than $39.68 for external hires, with a full future earning potential of $39.68-$61.52 per hour. This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for State of MN employee benefits.
Supplemental Information
The Sixth Judicial District serves Minnesota's Arrowhead Region, including the counties of Carlton , Cook , Lake , and St. Louis counties ( Duluth , Hibbing , and Virginia ).
Logistics: This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) unrepresented position. Work will be performed at the St. Louis County Courthouse, located at 100 North 5th Avenue West, Duluth, MN. Typical hours for this position are 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. This position may be working in a hybrid role consisting of a combination of remote and in-person work. When working remotely, access to reliable internet connection is required.
