Job Summary
MLM is seeking an experienced Insurance Underwriter to join our team! The Underwriter is responsible for managing an underwriting territory, including all new and renewal business, in compliance with Underwriting Guidelines and the Underwriter’s individual Letter of Authority. Has knowledge of products/services, marketing strategies and an understanding of the needs, issues and operations of the legal profession. Helps achieve MLM’s profit/growth goals through collaboration with other functional departments.
Location: MLM headquarters are based in Minneapolis, MN. Candidates in MN, PA or VA preferred but will consider other locations for the right candidate. Hybrid schedule based on location and team needs.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Review/analyze new and renewal business using the online application process
- Make skilled decisions regarding acceptability of accounts and the terms/conditions offered to applicant accounts/renewals
- Communicate decisions to applicants verbally and in writing while providing clear explanations and reasons for approval or denial
- Understand and articulate policy coverage terms, conditions and exclusions
- Provide timely service according to the established service standards
- Work collaboratively with the assigned Regional Sales Directors and Account Managers
- Effectively work with Director of Underwriting Administration to facilitate the development of Underwriting System changes and corresponding changes to procedures
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, economics or related field preferred
- In lieu of bachelor degree, an associate degree plus relevant experience
- CPCU and/or RPLU strongly preferred
- Three or more years of experience in this area. However, we are open to considering individuals with different levels of experience. If a candidate has slightly more or less experience, we can make adjustments as warranted to ensure the right fit for our team.
- Knowledge of insurance products/coverage, underwriting, pricing, risk selection, market segments and marketplace; insurance finance and actuarial concepts; loss control/risk engineering; marketing techniques, regulatory environment and reinsurance preferred
- Knowledge of territory management
- Ability to apply underwriting tools, systems, and resources to achieve goals and solve complex problems
- Excellent analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with underwriting software and tools; experience with databases and data management systems
- Advanced user of Outlook, Excel, Word, and SharePoint
- Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment
