Job Description

Responsibilities
Customer Service.
On a daily basis, live the mission, vision and values of M State to ensure a positive experience for all students and stakeholders. Service to M State students and stakeholders is a core component of the position and work responsibilities.
Evaluate and make minor repairs to equipment, furnishings, HVAC and vehicles. Perform preventative maintenance and log the results. Observe proper operation of facility boilers and associated equipment and record the results.
- Maintains, trouble shoots, and makes repairs to facility, equipment, and furniture by following the general and/or manufacturers guidelines.
- Check the operation, maintains and repairs of heating, cooling, electrical and air handling systems. Operate boilers and associated equipment.
- Maintain health and safety equipment, fire alarm, fire sprinkler, portable extinguishers, emergency eyewash and drench showers.
- Install and maintain new equipment, physical plant, classrooms and labs.
- Repair carpet, ceramic, quarry and composite tiles. Includes removal of damaged surfaces, preparation of sub-surfaces, application of adhesive, cutting and installation of new product.
Maintain exterior of facility including lawns, walks, parking lots, windows, doors, shrubs, walls, windows, exhaust fans, roofs and walls.
- Operate lawn mowers, snow blowers, and vehicles such as trucks and tractors.
- Conduct ground maintenance including raking, snow and ice removal, lawn care and maintenance of shrubbery, trees and irrigation system.
- Investigate roof leaks.
- Maintain and repair exhaust fans, and roof mounted HVAC equipment.
Ensure good public relations and maintain a safe and secure building.
- Use human relations skills by providing information and answering question from personnel and the general public who use the facility.
- Works as a team to accomplish desired outcomes.
- Conduct facility security checks and comply with rules and regulations related to emergencies.
- Assists with shipping and receiving of materials.
- Assist in recycling materials as necessary.
Assist general maintenance workers with special setups and emergency facility situations.
- Help locate and setup equipment, tables and chairs for special events.
- Render assistance in cleaning up spills, water overflow and other types of situations which require prompt attention.
Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.
- Travel to and work on the Wadena campus to assist as needed
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- general methods and practices of a variety of trade areas (e.g. mechanics, masonry, welding, electrical, plumbing and carpentry) sufficient to assist licensed trades workers and to repair machinery, tools and facilities in a timely and safe manner.
- occupational hazards and safety measures related to trades work sufficient to safely and efficiently perform the job duties.
Ability to:
- safely use hand and power hand tools.
- safely operate and maintain trucks, tractors, and other ground and road maintenance equipment.
- follow oral and written instructions.
- provide work instructions to unskilled helpers.
- perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, carrying and bending.
Valid Driver’s license necessary to drive department vehicles such as pick-ups, snowplows, sanding trucks, and state fleet vehicles on campus as well as off campus. Driving record must pass the State of Minnesota Department of Motor Vehicle review.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma and two years of post-secondary education.
- Customer service skills sufficient to actively listen to and understand customer needs and provide accurate information and appropriate alternatives in a timely, thorough, courteous, respectful, and professional manner.
- Two years of appropriate work experience.
- Knowledge of: equipment operation, tools, chemicals, and machines related to maintenance; OSHA and general safety procedures/regulations; general plant mechanical operations; general grounds keeping and horticultural practices.
- Employment skills and knowledge such as time management, human relations, organizational, and basic problem solving.
- State of Minnesota Class C Boilers license. First Class desired (time allowed to achieve).
