Job Description

Metro State University, Minnesota's public, urban university, and four-time recipient of the Insight Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award is seeking to hire a Program Admissions Coordinator / Academic Advisor. This is a full-time, temporary, fixed-term grant-funded position for approximately 13-15 months within the School of Urban Education that may be extended depending on performance and if additional funding is secured.

Responsibilities :

1. Lead, manage, recommend, monitor and communicate undergraduate student admission processes and decisions for the Urban Teacher Program in the School of Urban Education (UED).

2. Serve as a prerequisite academic advisor for prospective and current students at Metro State interested in teaching, especially those from school district and community-based organization Grow Your Own partnerships, who are seeking admission to the Urban Teacher Program and to guide them to understand the requirements and process for gaining admission and to navigate university educational requirements and supports.

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position. Only applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these minimum qualifications will be considered for the position :

  • Master's degree plus one year of professional experience in academic advising, counseling, or student development in a higher education setting; OR Bachelor's degree plus two years of professional experience in academic advising, counseling, or student development in a higher education setting; OR
  • Earned NACADA Academic Advising Graduate Certificate and 3 years of experience in academic advising, counseling, or student development in a higher education setting
  • Experience serving a racially, ethnically, linguistically, and culturally diverse student body including first-generation students, LGBTQIA -identifying students, adults, and students of various socio-economic backgrounds;
  • Demonstrates excellent, culturally responsive communication skills (oral and written, interpersonal, intercultural, non-verbal and group presentation) to effectively communicate and build positive rapport with students, faculty, university colleagues, and community partners;
  • Demonstrated experience and breadth of knowledge in applying a multifaceted body of advising theories and practices, student success strategies, counseling strategies, student development theory, and / or high-impact retention strategies and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn, understand, and communicate complex information such as degree requirements, policies, and procedures and to work effectively in student record and customer relationship management systems, including compliance with FERPA and similar regulations
  • Computer skills necessary for producing Word documents, emails, spreadsheets, record-keeping, appointment scheduling, presentations, and customer relationship management systems.

Preferred Qualification

  • Earned teaching licensure through a non-alternative pathway;
  • Experience teaching in preK-12 settings, especially with diverse urban children or youth;
  • Experience providing academic advising through remote means (e.g. Zoom, Teams, telephone, email, or social media, or other innovative strategies) to connect with students in a prompt and regular manner;
  • Experience working with college students in at least two of the following areas : orientation, strategies for academic success, advising, teaching college level courses, tutoring / mentoring, first year experience courses, financial literacy, financial aid, or learning communities;
  • Ability to develop, implement, and administer retention and outreach strategies for post-traditional, adult, and diverse student populations.
  • A record of professional development related to serving post-traditional and diverse students, including development on topics such as anti-racism, equity and inclusion;
  • Experience with developing plans for and managing projects;
  • Experience assessing program outcomes, analyzing data and gaps in service, and using data to recommend, design and / or implement changes to improve current practices; and
  • Familiarity with ISRS, RightNow, SLATE, DARS, ARSA and / or other student records systems as well as online customer relationship management systems.

    Physical Requirements of the Job : Light : Requires occasionally transporting such articles as file boxes and heavier materials with help from others and / or transporting light objects frequently. The position may require movement throughout building(s) to a significant degree.

    Salary : This is a Minnesota State University Association of Administrative and Service Faculty (MSUAASF) Range C position with a salary range of $46,372 (minimum) to $93,342 (maximum). Salary is commensurate with education and experience, and is determined by the collective bargaining agreement between Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (Minnesota State) and the MSUAASF organization.
