Organizational Function: Front Line Staff
PURPOSE:
Work in all gardens and horticultural areas at Minnetrista. Support the team in accomplishing daily and weekly assignments. Provide a welcoming and positive visitor and volunteer experience at all times. Expand and develop knowledge of horticulture in a public setting with on-the-job training and other professional development.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess high school diploma or equivalent required; additional courses in horticultural or related field preferred.
- Demonstrate general knowledge of horticulture or natural resources, preferred; past or current experience in outdoor manual labor is also preferred
- Learn and retain information regarding caring for the multiple types of gardens on Minnetrista property.
- Provide good customer service skills, work ethic, and teamwork skills.
- Possess valid driver’s license; operate a manual transmission vehicle around the grounds (preferred but can be accommodated).

JOB DUTIES:
- Maintain gardens and nature areas daily by weeding, planting, transplanting, watering, raking, digging, mulching, and deadheading.
- Engage in on-the-job training and other professional development to expand and develop knowledge of horticulture in a public setting, including the Indiana pesticide applicator core training and Indiana Accredited Horticulturist Program, among others.
- Assist other staff, interns, and volunteers as requested.
- Oversee off-site projects led by the department, including the fulfillment of contracts with external partners.
- Greet and interact with visitors, including but not limited to answering questions in a professional manner.
- Understand and maintain current knowledge of safe gardening measures and utilize appropriate safety gear and equipment.
- Perform all other duties required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work outside in different types of weather conditions, as well as standing, stooping, bending, climbing stairs, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, crawling, and crouching at any given time. Lifting up to 50-pounds. Must be able to move about 40-acre main campus. Work hours require flexibility with some evenings and weekends. A valid driver’s license is required for some portions of the job but may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals.
