CLINICAL THERAPIST

BASIC PURPOSE:
The Clinical Therapist plays a major role in providing and coordinating mental health services for school based behavioral health and MAT programs. Duties include administering and developing programs, assessment and evaluation. Counseling and referral for patients and facilitating self-help and personal growth programs. Provision of individual, family, and group therapy for youth and adults primarily in a behavioral health environment.

The MHHS Clinical Therapist maintains an ongoing awareness of organizational development and recommends changes to insure professional services and organizational goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR CLINICAL THERAPIST

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and feeling are necessary body movements utilized in performing nursing duties throughout the work shift.
2. Must be able to read and write legibly in English.
3. Must be able to type.
4. Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
5. Hearing within normal range is required.
6. Visual acuity must be within normal range.
7. Must be able to sit for extended periods reading charts, files, etc.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must be able to handle and maintain confidential information.
2. Must have the ability to perform concentrated and complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and highly technical situations.
3. Must have the ability to work successfully under highly stressful conditions, and must be capable of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis.
4. Must have the ability to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific principles, and also be able to collaborate with other multi-disciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion.
5. Must have the ability to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures.
6. Must have effective reading and comprehension skills.
7. Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
8. Must have skills to work with statistics, data collections, etc.
9. Must be able to organize, prioritize and complete assigned tasks.
10. Must be able to work flexible and/or extended hours.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS (POTENTIAL FOR):
1. Exposure to high stress and frequent work interruptions.
2. Exposure to cleaning agents and disinfectants.
3. Exposure to toxic gas, fumes, and odors.
4. Exposure to electrical current.
5. Exposure to radiation from radiology equipment.

ELECTONIC HEALTH RECORDS (EMR)
  • Demonstrates capabilities of use of computers and EMR, as needed, for documenting required data.
  • Documents assessment, plan, interactions, and interventions according to departmental and health system guideline.
SERVICES
  • Provides psychosocial assessments of patients and families to identify emotional, social and community strengths and issues related to their diagnosis, illness, treatment, and/or life situation.
  • Formulates, develops, and implements comprehensive psychosocial treatment plans utilizing appropriate and evidence based psychotherapy treatments and interventions. Interventions may include crisis, play, art, brief and long-term individual, marital, family and/or group therapies as well as grief and bereavement work.
  • Screens, identifies, diagnoses, treats, and helps to manage behavioral health and/or substance abuse problems in patients and family members.
  • Consults with physicians, clinical staff and management to provide a professional opinion for patient care and program development.
  • Consults with staff on handling crises, recommending, accommodations and transfers when appropriate.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary health care teams and represents clinical perspective/liaison with patient and family.
  • Provides staff training in behavioral health if asked.
  • Maintains working knowledge of relevant medical/legal issues that impact on patient care, e.g., advance directives, child and elder abuse.
  • Maintains professional association with local mental health services, university resources and other sources of patient help.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to patient rights.
  • Adheres to MHHSs Restraint Policy and assists in emergencies as needed.
  • Adheres to professional guidelines outlined in MHHS Policy, state law and guidelines found employees licensure boards professional code.
  • Monitors progress toward achieving program goals.
  • Consults on the need for and developing plans for organizational changes, reviewing program impact on local level and organization as a whole, assisting policy change in program areas.
  • Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating QI strategies.
  • Attends and participates in staff, committee, departments, or other administrative meetings
  • Supervises assigned staff and/or inters and their work, delegating as needed.
  • Participates in regular professional conferences; keeps current with clinical and evidence based treatment of mental disorders and seeks to increase further enhancement of job related knowledge.
  • Maintains continuing education as required for state licensure.
  • Maintains awareness of their own physical and mental health, seeking assistance for self-improvement and general health so as to model effective self care.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Minimum of a Masters degree in Social Work, Counseling, or related field.
2. Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), or Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor (PLPC), or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). (Non-independently licensed therapists must obtain their independent licensure within 3 years of employment).
3. Experience working with youth and adults.
4. Experience with group facilitation.
5. Knowledgeable of state and federal regulations regarding the provision of mental health services.
6. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written.
7. Must demonstrate ability to communicate and to use tact and diplomacy in dealing with clinic personnel, supervisor, medical providers and other outside agencies.
8. Ability to work independently while being able to communicate with other employees.
9. Ability to assess complex situations and develop a realistic, appropriate and safe plan.
10. Must demonstrate characteristics of dependability and punctuality.
11. Knowledgeable of treatment strategies and prevention activities for youth and adults.
