POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN
EMT-Basic
DEPARTMENT: EMERGENCY/AMBULANCE TRANSPORT
REPORTS TO : GROUND TEAM LEADER
BASIC PURPOSE: Provides non-invasive interventions with minimal equipment to stabilize patients on the scene and during transport to the hospital.
Provides direct patient care utilizing Basic Life Support (BLS) protocols. Identifies and meets the patient’s needs in compliance with BLS protocols and/or Medical Command orders. Administers and maintains medications and procedures under BLS protocols and/or Medical Command orders. EMT’s are responsible for providing life support care up to their certification level. All employees are responsible for communicating appropriately, ensuring the readiness of vehicles and equipment, maintaining uniforms and stations, attending training, and following safety and medical guidelines.
Certified EMTs may perform all procedures and administer all medications contained in the current 6000 Series WV EMS System Protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B)
2. 1-5 years experience in some form of clinical setting in a Health Care environment is preferred
3. Current certificate in Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
4. An understanding of medical terminology
5. Current or Valid WV drivers license
6. EVOC certificate

3. Ability to stand, walk, climb, balance, reach, stoop, bend, crawl and crouch for extended time periods. The average situation will require the individual to work in a range of 35 to 65-degree bends. This would involve: lifting a patient, lifting equipment, treating a patient at ground level, sitting on a bench located in the ambulance. This activity may be prolonged and last up to 30 minutes or more. During any given call, the provider may bend and/or stoop any number of times per incident.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND MECHANICAL CONDITIONS: The EMT delivers transport services under the stresses of ground transport, with frequent exposure to blood/body fluids, in sometimes hazardous conditions, near moving mechanical parts and within high noise environments.
1. Exposure to body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, sharps, and explosive gases.
2. Exposure to cleaning agents and disinfectants.
3. Exposure to toxic gas, fumes, and odors.
4. Exposure to high stress and constant interruptions.
5. Exposure to electrical current.
6. Exposure to radiation from x-rays.

SKILLS
- Demonstrates capabilities of use of computer, electronic health records, documenting required data, vital signs, health problems, med list, chronic disease measures
- Promptly responds to instructions from a dispatcher and drives and operates specially equipped emergency vehicles to specified locations at a safe and controlled speed in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards.

- Assists the patient/family in preparing patient for transfer.
- Notifies Medical Command of transport and gives verbal report. Evaluate the risks and benefits of an emergent transport (lights and siren). Consult Medical Command to determine best mode of transport and appropriate destination.
- Documents transfer and appropriate EMTALA requirements.
- In a timely manner, reports safety concerns and hazardous conditions.
- Perform patient assessment and documents findings.
- Maintain patient electronic file; recording in a timely and comprehensive manner all relevant care information and updating the Medical Command, as needed, regarding a patient’s condition and plan of care. Documentation will include all care and interventions when appropriate.
- Carry out standing orders set forth by ALS protocols to maintain compliance with established guidelines to meet the patient’s needs.
- Participate in education and/or activities that are available to maintain certification and improve practical skills for improving health outcomes for the patient.
