Job Description
Under the supervision of the Public Health Team Supervisor, provides paraprofessional vision and hearing screening services to children ages 0-21. Screens children in various settings, including public, private, and charter K-12 schools, daycare and preschool centers, special education centers, migrant education centers, health department offices, and other locations serving infants, children, youth, and young adults. Ensures compliance with the Michigan Public Health Code by delivering periodic vision and hearing screenings to all children and referring those with potential issues for further evaluation and services.
Work is performed in schools, preschools, childcare centers, migrant education centers, health department offices, and other facilities throughout the county. Daily travel throughout the county is a necessary part of the role. Mileage reimbursement is provided in accordance with organizational policy. Essential Job Functions
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Completes hearing and vision screening training through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and maintains ongoing competency in screening procedures.
- Administers age-appropriate vision and hearing screenings to children, documenting results in an electronic medical record system for billing and reporting purposes.
- Collaborates with community and school partners to establish a screening schedule and coordinates with staff at each location to secure appropriate testing areas, such as classrooms or other spaces with sound insulation and minimal visual distractions.
- Transports, sets up, tests, and breaks down age-appropriate screening equipment for each session, ensuring proper handling and storage to maintain equipment functionality.
- Reviews screening results for each child and provides referrals to relevant resources for further evaluation or medical treatment when necessary.
- Works within a multi-disciplinary team and contributes to an equitable, safe, and inclusive work environment.
- Communicates with parents and school personnel to follow up on referrals, explain screening results, and encourage the completion of additional evaluation and treatment services when needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED. Previous hearing and vision screening experience and/or experience in healthcare or educational settings preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
- This position requires successful completion of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) training in both vision and hearing screening within one year of hire. Recertification must be maintained as required by MDHHS, including successful completion of all required workshops and trainings.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and customer relations skills with the ability to engage positively with individuals from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and all age groups.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including electronic medical records, word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
- Thorough working knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements related to the confidentiality of patient health information, including the provisions under HIPAA.
- Good working knowledge of quality assurance and continuous quality improvement practices.
- Familiarity with the Michigan Public Health Code, MDHHS, Ottawa County Department of Public Health, and Medicaid regulations and standards.
Note: Individuals in this role provide services to clients at various locations throughout the county and are responsible for their own transportation.
Physical Requirements:
- Must have adequate manual dexterity to operate screening equipment.
- Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to read equipment screens and assess test results.
- Must be able to transport, set up, and dismantle equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. for screenings. Work locations may change daily.
- Work is performed in schools, preschools, childcare centers, migrant education centers, health department offices, and other facilities throughout the county.
- Employees must frequently load and unload equipment from their personal vehicles and set-up and tear-down equipment.
