Job Description
Under the supervision of the Treatment Services Manager, provides individual, family, and group therapy for juvenile offenders and their families. May be assigned to treatment of juveniles confined in the Juvenile Detention Center, status offenders in diversionary programs or other juveniles needing treatment services.
This is a full-time, benefitted position working Monday through Friday at the Juvenile Detention Center located at 12110 Fillmore St, West Olive, MI 49460. Will be scheduled to work evening hours as necessary.
Essential Job Functions
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provides direct care to juveniles (individual, family or group therapy) participating in court programs, as assigned. May be assigned to treatment of juveniles confined in the Juvenile Detention Center, status offenders in diversionary programs or other juveniles needing treatment services.
- Assesses juveniles and their families and develops individualized treatment plans and goals. Identifies and implements strategies to effect improvements in individual and family psychological and social functioning within the structure of the juvenile justice system.
- Provides crisis intervention services for juveniles and their families, assisting families to de-escalate conflict situations.
- Maintains clinical case files and case notes for proper documentation of juvenile assessments, diagnoses, progress, and treatment services delivered.
- Provides referrals for those juveniles requiring treatment beyond the scope of court programs to outside clinicians and agencies.
- Performs other functions as required.
Required Education, Training and Experience
Master's degree in social work, psychology, or counseling combined with one (1) year of progressively responsible experience in providing treatment services to at-risk youth, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Licensed in the State of Michigan in social work, psychology or counseling.
- Must complete the Michigan Judicial Institute Certification Training for Juvenile Court Staff within two (2) years from the date of employment as a caseworker.
- Valid State of Michigan Driver's License.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Thorough working knowledge of evidence based/best practices in treatment and risk/needs assessment approaches with delinquent youth. Including knowledge of adolescent development, substance abuse, family, group and juvenile delinquency dynamics and intervention techniques.
- Employs a range of clinical treatment, including cognitive-behavioral, parent coaching and experiential interventions as appropriate to diagnoses and needs.
- Ability to interact positively and professionally with at-risk youth from widely diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and with varying levels of social and interpersonal communications skills.
- Thorough working knowledge of the juvenile justice system and federal, state and local statutes and regulations with respect to the involuntary detention of juveniles.
- Computer literacy and familiarity with word-processing, spreadsheet, database management and other applications software.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements:
- Must possess sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to visually monitor facility residents in all activities.
- Must possess sufficient auditory acuity, with or without audio-logical appliances, to monitor residents in all activities.
- Must have the ability to detect smoke, fire and contraband in the facility.
- Must have sufficient mobility, with or without assistive devices, to supervise and observe residents participating in activities in all areas of the facility.
- Must have sufficient mobility, strength and dexterity to search individual resident housing areas for contraband and weapons.
- Must possess sufficient strength and mobility to subdue and restrain residents when necessary.
Working Conditions:
May be exposed to risk of physical violence while conducting client home visits. May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens if required to conduct a drug or alcohol screening test.
