Description
At Miriam's Kitchen, our Security Officer role is far from typical. We focus on serving the chronically homeless community through split shifts from 6 am to 11 am and 3 pm to 6 pm. Our guests often have diverse mental capacities, including challenges related to mental health or substance abuse. We are looking for individuals who are not only skilled in security but also excel as people-persons, engaging comfortably with our guests. Former or retired police officers and military veterans are strongly encouraged to apply for this unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
Position Summary:
Miriam’s security officers are responsible for overseeing the safety of the dining room and the safety of its staff, volunteers and guests. Security officers also have the responsibility for securing the outside perimeter of Western Presbyterian Church (WPC) during operation hours to ensure safety, prevention of illegal activities and damages to the property.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- On duty on time and participates in 15-minute pre-opening meetings with meals/case management check-in to confirm the readiness to open the doors for clients and monitor the guest line outside
- Screens individuals entering the dining room to ensure guests who have been banned from Miriam’s Kitchen do not return
- Remain fully present and engaged in the dining room during meals and program/case management and must alternate patrol rotation of the following areas: Outside 90-degree perimeter around the front and side of church, dining room door to garage, bathrooms, service line and garage enforcing and ensuring safety and compliance of the rules & guidelines
- Ensures clients respect and follow the Miriam’s Kitchen client guidelines & posted rules
- Enforces the consequences for violation of the guidelines fairly
- Escorts clients who may be asked to leave the dining room
- Assist with transitions from Meals (and vice versa in pm) and monitor during case management and activities to ensure any guests being disruptive are asked to leave, and all guests remaining in the dining room are engaged with activities or a case manager
- Outside – Ensures guests respect guidelines and discard all trash in available receptacles surrounding the building perimeter.

- Providing courteous and helpful assistance to guests, employees and visitors while maintaining a secure environment
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Physical and mental capabilities required to perform the position's essential functions.
Physical Demands - Regularly required to stand; frequently required to talk or hear; occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch; must be able to lift objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
Mental Demands- Ability to communicate (written and spoken) effectively in English is required.
TRAVEL DEMANDS: This position occasionally requires local travel between Miriam's Kitchen and partner sites.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- Security staff must wear MK-provided Security Guard uniform (T-shirt, polo, moisture-wicking, sweatshirt, etc.).
- Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Certification - preferred
- Bi-Lingual (Spanish) - preferred
