What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cataloger position at Mississippi Department of Archives and History?
The Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) seeks a copy cataloger to serve in the published information section of Archives and Records Services. The cataloger will be responsible for the initial processing of acquisitions and conducting copy cataloging according to current standards for various items, including monographs, maps, broadsides, sheet music, subject files, and serials. They will actively maintain and enhance the quality of records in the library catalog, oversee the management of stacks, and adjust collections as needed. Additionally, they will plan and execute section and division-wide projects, focusing on cataloging-related projects.
The cataloger will attend training for Integrated Library System (ILS) updates, report any issues to the system administrator, perform conservation work when necessary, and contribute to special projects and other duties as assigned.
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess an understanding and experience with MARC 21 format for bibliographic data; demonstrated cataloging experience; knowledge of DACS; excellent time management skills; and the ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
This role typically requires a bachelor's degree and two years of related experience. The agency's preferred qualifications include a master's degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited college or university and two years of experience cataloging in an archive, library, or university. Alternatively, candidates with a bachelor's degree in Library Science or a related field from an accredited institution and four years of cataloging experience in an archive, library, or university will also be considered.
