MS Archaeology Survey Manager

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History is recruiting an MS Archaeology Survey Manager to serve in Historic Preservation.

Responsibilities include:

• Directing and reporting on cultural resource surveys undertaken by the archaeology section of the Historical Preservation Division in accordance with the MS Antiquities Law.
• Assisting the chief archaeologist and agency leadership in monitoring archaeological sites on publicly owned land, in alignment with the Agency's role in identifying, protecting, and distributing information about archaeological sites in Mississippi.
• Serving as the Principal Investigator for the Mississippi Archaeological Survey (MAS) and directing archaeological surveys on state lands in accordance with the MS Antiquities Law and NHPA.
• Overseeing the completion of MAS project reports.
• Reviewing Phase I archaeology reports, scopes of work, research designs, and cultural resource assessments in compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA.
• Monitoring the status of publicly owned archaeological sites and coordinating outreach and actions as appropriate.
• Entering data from fieldwork and coordinating with the site file manager for site data entry and GIS file management.
• Responding to public inquiries, conducting site visits, and assessing eligibility when necessary.
• Maintaining an inventory of field equipment, including vehicles, and completing requisitions and needs assessments as required.
• Overseeing the Abandoned Cemeteries program.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

This position is part of the archaeology section and reports to the chief archaeologist. Although rare, some overnight travel may be required.

To be successful in this position, the candidate must be able to think analytically, have a demonstrated ability in technical writing, and work effectively both independently and as a member of a team. Incumbents must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree and four to seven years of related experience are typically required.
• Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in archaeology, anthropology, history, or a related field (with a preference for archaeology or anthropology).
• Completion of an archaeological field school is preferred.
• At least two to four years of prior experience in North American archaeology is preferred.
• Experience with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is preferred.
• A working knowledge of ArcGIS Enterprise is also preferred.
