The Mississippi Department of Archives and History is seeking a Visitor Center Associate for the Eudora Welty House & Garden. This public-facing position welcomes guests and responds to calls and emails in a helpful and friendly manner. In addition to booking reservations and operating the point-of-sale register, the position also includes introducing guests to museum exhibits. The Associate will monitor the gift shop and alert staff when stock is low. They will learn about Eudora Welty, our exhibits, and our merchandise to answer customer questions and make shopping recommendations.
Duties of this position include:
- Daily store operations, including opening/closing procedures and managing the point-of-sale register.
- Engaging with visitors and providing attentive, welcoming dialogue in the store.
- Monitoring inventory and recommending restocks as needed to prevent out-of-stock merchandise.
- Maintaining accurate records of drawer and change, and making deposits as necessary.
- Learning and sharing knowledge of merchandise with museum staff and customers.
- Accurately recording visitor numbers and zip codes for reporting purposes.
- Handling occasional shipping of merchandise.
- Becoming familiar with Eudora Welty and the exhibits to recommend potential merchandise.
- Answering and directing telephone calls, voicemails, and emails.
- Managing guest reservations and walk-ups.
- Providing visitors with information on museum exhibits and upcoming events.
- Opening and closing the Visitor Center and Welty House as needed.
- Keeping shelves continually stocked to maintain a visually appealing space.
- Learning tour scripts and giving or assisting with Welty House tours as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent and three years of related experience, or a bachelor’s degree.
Work Schedule:
- Maximum of 29 hours per week. The schedule is Wednesday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Saturday from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m.
