Position: Financial Controller
Location: Moss Point, MS
Reports to: VP of Accounting, Finance, and Customer Service
Job Summary: The Financial Controller will work closely with VP of Accounting, Finance, and Customer Service by overseeing all financial aspects of MSE’s operations, ensuring financial integrity, compliance, and efficiency. This role involves managing accounting functions, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and risk management. The Financial Controller will work closely with executive leadership to provide financial insights that drive strategic business decisions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in compliance with GAAP and company policies.
- Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Manage the budgeting and forecasting processes, providing financial analysis to support business decisions.
- Monitor cash flow, banking activities, and investment strategies to optimize financial performance.
- Work closely with operational teams to track revenues, expenses, and cost efficiency.
- Oversee tax planning, compliance, and liaise with external auditors and tax advisors.
- Identify and mitigate financial risks, ensuring business continuity and long-term financial stability.
- Prepare reports and financial presentations for senior management and stakeholders.
- Lead and mentor accounting staff to enhance team performance and development; including performance evaluations and lead team project management
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred).
- Minimum of 6-8 years of accounting/finance experience, preferably in the transportation, railroad, or logistics industry.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Proficiency in accounting software and financial management tools (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle).
- Experience with regulatory compliance, tax planning, and audits.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong leadership and communication abilities with experience in team management.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in short line or freight railroad finance operations.
- Understanding of railroad industry financial metrics and cost structures.
