Essential Duties

To teach Survey of Late World Literature, Basic Writing, English Composition I and / or English Composition II, and upper-level literature or writing classes including Literature in the Postcolonial World or other world literature offerings, both online and face to face.

To meet with students for at least 6 office hours per week and to be available to communicate with students regularly. To attend department meetings, convocation, and other university-wide meetings as needed. To keep accurate attendance, provide syllabi by the first class day, grade assignments in a timely manner, to submit midterm and final grades on time, and to communicate with the department chair and other faculty as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• PhD in English, Comparative Literature, or a related field
• graduate coursework or demonstrated teaching experience or scholarship in World Literature and Postcolonial Literature
• demonstrated experience in one or more of the other areas of expertise listed below
• enthusiasm for mentoring and advising a diverse population of students from underserved communities

Job Description Summary

Mississippi University for Women invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in English with an emphasis on World Literature and Postcolonial Literature. We seek a candidate who can add to the diversity of our course offerings with specialties such as African, Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, and / or Latin American literatures. Experience in the areas of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Religious Studies, or Professional Writing are also welcome, though not required.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the qualifications and enthusiasm to teach a broad range of literature, composition, and writing courses in the Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy with majors in English, Spanish, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and minors in Philosophy and Religious Studies. The English major includes five concentrations : Literature, African American Literature, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and English with Teacher Certification. We are an interdisciplinary faculty, and we seek a colleague to help us expand and diversify our programs and course offerings.

The department offers two graduate programs : the Low-Residency Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and the Master of Arts in Women's Leadership. A significant record of publication in the genre is expected for teaching graduate creative writing workshops in Poetry, Fiction, CNF, and Playwriting or Screenwriting. Literature faculty may also teach graduate-level literature courses in the MFA program, and faculty with a research interest or experience in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies may be considered for teaching in the Women's Leadership program.

Applicants will submit a cover letter; CV; names and contact information of three references; a statement of teaching philosophy; a writing sample of their scholarly work; and syllabi for Survey of Late World Literature and at least one other course, preferably upper-level in the applicant's area of interest. Syllabi should be submitted as Course Proposal 1 and Course Proposal 2. A third syllabus or course proposal is optional.

Screening interviews will be conducted after December 1, 2024 by phone or video conference as determined by the search committee, followed by on-campus interviews for selected applicants. Reference letters will be requested at the screening interview stage, and follow-up reference checks will be made before or after the campus interview stage.
