The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula is seeking a DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION to join their team. This position plans and implements public service and education programs for the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula. Assists the Museum Director in the general administration of museum operations.

Representative Examples of Work

Integrates the museum’s public service mandate into exhibitions, museum education programs, publications and public relations efforts to make the museum a viable and accessible community institution. Plans, develops and implements programs, workshops, lectures and special events to expand the educational role of the museum within the community. Develops learning opportunities for various groups including school groups, outreach to under-served populations, professional organizations and conferences. Works closely with area school systems to facilitate the incorporation of the museums’ programs into the education curriculum. Develops and evaluates interpretive processes and assists in the interpretation of the museum’s exhibits and programs. Develops the educational focus of exhibits and programs to represent the audience’s interests. May assist in the development of the museum's exhibits and serve as occasional exhibit curator. Designs, plans and implements a wide range of educational programs including school tours; adult tours; specialty tours; lectures, workshops, special events, etc. Develops and fosters liaisons with other professional institutions and groups related to the museum's education function. Recruits, trains, oversees, and evaluates educational interns and other assistants. Supervises assigned staff including hiring, training, scheduling and performance management. Creates and distributes flyers and brochures related to education programs. Develops public relations materials, guides and other information related to the museum programs and activities. Opens and closes museum and exhibit buildings including disarming and resetting the internal alarm system. Responds as necessary if called from the security list. Maintains records of educational programs and activities to produce quantitative and qualitative information. OTHER DUTIES: Performs reception and salesclerk duties in the absence of assigned volunteers/employees. Performs related work as required or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in museum studies, education or history.
  • Requires two years of experience in the development and delivery of educational programs.

Physical/Environmental Demands

Work schedule may vary and may require evening and weekend hours. Work on the 4th of July is required. Works primarily in the museum but must frequently drive an automobile to remote sites. Work site requires frequent climbing of stairs or walking over uneven ground. Requires some physical activity in maintenance, repair and installation of exhibits. Requires lifting and carrying, frequently at 20-25 lbs and occasionally up to 50 #. Requires a valid driver’s License
