What are the responsibilities and job description for the Imaging Lab Coordinator position at Missouri Botanical Garden?
Summary: This position coordinates the day-to-day operations in the Imaging Lab, oversees specimen digitization in the herbarium, supervises digitization staff, students and interns, and is responsible for producing, editing and ensuring quality of digital images. The coordinator also works closely with the directors of the herbarium to develop and troubleshoot imaging and digitization workflows, consult on new equipment purchases and existing equipment maintenance, and set institutional policies and best practices for digitization of the Garden's collections.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversees herbarium and library digitization projects, including establishing and troubleshooting workflows as well as ensuring quality standards are maintained and progress goals are met in a timely manner.
- Supervises full- and part-time staff, students, and interns working on digitization projects.
- Digitizes printed materials and scientific specimens using a variety of equipment including scanners and digital cameras.
- Troubleshoots equipment-related problems, with help from the IT department.
- Develops changes in imaging procedures and adapts different workflows appropriately according to project
- Documents all procedures and tracks digitization productivity through appropriate metrics.
- Assists Imaging Technicians with digitizing, editing and posting images on Garden websites.
- Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed; informs employees/students/volunteers of safety guidelines, methods to reduce hazards. Reports all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately.
- Coordinates and communicates with other institutions on digitization projects.
- Behaves and communicates in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork
and cooperation, within our division and throughout the Garden, with co-workers, supervisors/managers, volunteers, visitors and employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position serves as a lead role in laboratory and oversees activities of Imaging Technicians, students, and interns.

Qualifications/Experience:
- Three to five years' related experience in production of printed volumes to include editing, image scanning, page layout, copying and editing text, bibliographic citations and botanical nomenclature.
- Knowledge of botanical terminology helpful.
- Advanced knowledge of imaging software, including Adobe Photoshop and scanning software required.
- Advanced knowledge of photography and digital imaging preferred.
- Computer hardware and software proficiency required.
- Demonstrated technical ability to effectively and safely operate imaging equipment.
- Minimum of two (2) years leading and directing the work of others.
- Exceptional demonstrated project management, organizational, time management skills, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills required.
- Scheduling flexibility is required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays.
- Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination will be required.

Education:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, photography, art, design or related field required.
- An equivalent combination of education, skills and experience may be considered.
Language Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral/written).
Mathematical Skills: Proficient H.S. math aptitude requires ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages and decimals; etc.
Reasoning Ability: Requires ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
Computer Skills:
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Word and Excel programs required; strong working knowledge of Outlook features required and PowerPoint preferred.
- Solid Internet research skills.
- Ability to use e-mail to communicate with Garden staff in order to answer questions and service their needs.
- Strong knowledge of imaging software, including Adobe PhotoShop and scanning software required.
- Must understand computer operating systems in order to troubleshoot hardware and software issues.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to utilize computer keyboard (typing) and sit for extended periods of the work day.
- Must be able to lift and carry 20 pounds.
- Requires clarity of vision at 20 inches or less with the ability to bring objects into sharp focus.
- Requires clarity of vision to accurately clarify colors.
- Actively works hands-on with scanning and computer equipment.
- May be required to perform tasks at varying heights (i.e., climb ladders, step stools, etc.)
Work Environment:
- Quiet indoor office setting; shared work space, office environment with multiple staff within the department.
- May require travel to professional meetings.
