Job Title: Crew Leader Department: Operations Reports To: Director of Operations Location: On-Site Job Type: Full-Time Job Overview: We are looking for an experienced and motivated Crew Leader to join our team and lead a team of environmental stewardship crew members. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing and managing day-to-day activities of environmental projects, including invasive species management, rain garden and bioswale stewardship, and native seed install/stewardship on solar sites. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental conservation, excellent leadership skills, and a passion for preserving natural ecosystems.
Responsibilities:
● Leadership and Supervision: Lead, manage, and motivate a crew of environmental stewardship workers, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently, safely, and in accordance with project goals.
● Project Coordination: Oversee and coordinate the daily activities of the crew, including task assignments, and ensuring that all work is done to high environmental standards.
● Training and Mentorship: Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to crew members on proper stewardship techniques, safety protocols, equipment usage, and best practices in environmental stewardship.
● Project Implementation: Supervise and participate in environmental projects such as invasive species removal, planting native species, erosion control, prairie install/management, and solar site management
● Resource Management: Manage tools, equipment, and materials, ensuring their proper use, maintenance, and storage.
● Monitoring and Reporting: Track project progress, collect data, and provide updates on project status to the Director of Operations. Help assess the success of restoration or stewardship efforts.
● Safety Compliance: Ensure that safety protocols are followed, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe operation of tools and machinery, and adherence to safety guidelines during all tasks.
● Problem Solving and Troubleshooting: Address and resolve any challenges or issues that arise on the job site. Find solutions to problems related to project execution, equipment, or crew dynamics.
● Documentation: Maintain accurate records of daily work completed, time spent, materials used, and any other relevant project details. Prepare and submit reports as required.
Requirements:
● Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. A degree or certification in environmental science, ecology, biology, or a related field is preferred.
● Experience: At least 5 years of experience in environmental stewardship or related field, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
● Skills: Strong knowledge of environmental stewardship practices. Familiarity with local flora and fauna, including invasive species management.
● Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead, motivate, and manage a diverse team. Ability to make decisions, assign tasks, and ensure high performance and safety standards.
● Communication: Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with crew members, supervisors, and external stakeholders, including the public and local communities.
● Physical Demands: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including working outdoors in varying weather conditions, lifting heavy objects (up to 50 pounds), and engaging in extended periods of outdoor labor.
● Certifications: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. First Aid and CPR certifications preferred. Additional certifications in environmental management or safety are a plus (e.g., pesticide applicator’s license, chainsaw safety certification).
● Organizational Skills: Strong ability to plan and coordinate activities, manage resources, and keep accurate records.
Preferred Qualifications:
● Proficiency with GIS or GPS technologies for environmental monitoring and project mapping.
● Familiarity with green infrastructure or sustainable practices such as low-impact development, rain gardens, and stormwater management.
● Previous experience working with state and federal agencies on environmental projects.
● Proficiency in operating machinery such as tractors, chainsaws, skid steers, or other landscaping and environmental management equipment.
