General Function
The Assistant Professor is a member of the ranked faculty with an intermediate academic rank who has demonstrated achievement in the areas of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate to the discipline. The Assistant Professor’s teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor. The Assistant Professor engages in scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and is expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research, based upon the availability of resources and consistent with the mission of the University.
Description Of Primary Duties
The Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2025 for a program coordinator of Bachelor of Science in Education, Speech and Theatre. The successful applicant will teach a general methods of teaching course, supervise student teachers placed in area high schools, and other courses as applicable within the candidate’s area(s) of expertise.
The Department of Theatre and Dance in the School of the Arts is a vibrant department with 18 full time faculty and 4 full time staff that maintains about 260 majors in seven undergraduate degrees programs, which are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre ( NAST ) and the National Association of Schools of Music ( NASM ). The department will produce several mainstage productions per season, and an additional four or five supplemental productions to ensure that students from all degree programs and areas of study have ample opportunities to develop their crafts. During the summer, the department produces Tent Theatre , a semi-professional theatre company in the new John Goodman Amphitheatre, named after notable alumnus John Goodman.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Assistant Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Additional Qualifications
A terminal degree in education, theatre (including MFA ), speech, or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.
A proven track record of effective and successful teaching at the secondary (high school) level, familiarity with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education ( DESE ) and state certification requirements, demonstrable research agenda, potential for the recruitment of undergraduate students. A commitment to undergraduate teaching, recruitment of undergraduate students, mentorship of pre-professional education students, and maintaining an active research agenda are expected.
