General Function

The Campus Safety Specialist – Lead routinely performs all of the duties of the Campus Safety Specialist, serves as a leader and provides guidance, motivation, training, mentoring, and assistance to employees of their assigned shift, and completes special projects and assignments. The Campus Safety Specialist – Lead acts as the Supervisor, Campus Safety in their absence. The Campus Safety Specialist – Lead coordinates crime prevention strategies and programs, presents safety, security, and prevention/awareness lectures throughout the campus community, and maintains positive interactions with students, staff, faculty and guests. The Campus Safety Specialist – Lead maintains accurate records, prepares various reports, and reviews reports of other employees.

Description Of Primary Duties

  • Contributes to departmental objectives by performing all duties of a Campus Safety Specialist as described in the Campus Safety Specialist job description and serves as Supervisor, Campus Safety when the Supervisor, Campus Safety is not available.
  • Helps to assure new and existing Campus Safety Specialists are well-trained for their roles by delivering Campus Safety Services Orientation in a classroom environment as well as by providing on-the-job training for Campus Safety Specialists.
  • Mitigates the impact of emergencies by serving as the Campus Safety Services representative within the incident command system in the absence of a higher ranking supervisor, coordinates with emergency services and other University departments, requests and directs resources to mitigate the incident, and ensures notification of higher ranking personnel, as appropriate.
  • Helps to encourage positive relationships between the Office of University Safety and the campus community by providing training about safety issues to various campus organizations and developing and presenting specific crime prevention strategies in response to campus safety trends.
  • Completes special projects as assigned and performs the duties of a dispatch specialist when required.
  • Assists with the approval process of reports as assigned, schedules Campus Safety Specialists as assigned, and performs mentoring of Campus Safety Specialists.
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Director, University Safety or designee.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the Office of University Safety by adhering to the Office of University Safety Policy and Procedures Manual and performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned in a professional manner.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Experience: At least two years of experience in positions involving customer service, safety, security, loss control, parking, traffic control, fire prevention, emergency services or related fields is required.

Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. The ability to conduct effective interviews, make accurate observations, and write detailed reports is required. Excellent interpersonal skills are required. Strong organizational skills are required. Supervisory skills are required. The ability to plan, organize, motivate, and coach a team or multiple teams is required. Computer literacy is required. The ability to work without close supervision and within a framework of specific guidelines is required. The ability to learn to operate the full range of department vehicles, interpret fire alarm systems, develop an understanding of the surveillance camera system, develop knowledge of campus buildings and geography, and work effectively as a team member and individual is required. The ability to learn, understand, and apply departmental general orders is required. Technical knowledge of security functions, effective security assessment skills, and effective problem solving skills are required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Certification and Training: A valid driver’s license is required. Current certification for First Aid, Adult, Child, and Infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation ( CPR ) and Automated External Defibrillators ( AED ) is required throughout the appointment. Successful completion of Incident Command System ( ICS ) 100, 200 and National Incident Management System ( NIMS ) 700 and 800 training is required or must be completed within one year of appointment. Successful completion of the Campus Safety Services orientation training is required prior to assignment or two years of experience as a Campus Safety Specialist at Missouri State University is required. Successful completion of the MSU bicycle training is required.

Effort: The position requires extended periods of standing, the ability to move quickly throughout campus on foot and by bike, including climbing stairs in all University buildings. The position periodically requires working in confined spaces and at heights. The position requires the ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Work is performed primarily out-of-doors, in varied weather conditions. Bicycle duty occurs on all three shifts.

Other: The scope of the position may require nighttime, holiday, and/or weekend work. Overtime may be required to meet the staffing needs of the department. Employees in this job classification are designated as essential employees and must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed. Positions associated with this position classification may be located in facilities requiring the position to be designated ‘sensitive’ as defined by University policy. Positions associated with this position classification may include job duties, responsibilities, or activities that are subject to export control regulations.
