This is a professional, exempt, Information Technology position responsible for design, implementation, management and support of Linux workstations, and research instrumentation and devices. The successful candidate will analyze, document, install and maintain operating systems and servers, storage systems and other physical and software systems supported by the IT department. Providing excellent face-to-face technical support to both internal and external constituents is required. Due to the rapid change in this field, remaining current with emerging IT trends related to research computing and research support is expected. The successful candidate for this position will work well under pressure and maintain professional composure during high stress events. Outstanding communication skills are required.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for design, implementation, management and support of complex operating systems/platforms being supported
  • Analyzes, documents, installs and maintains operating systems and servers, storage systems and/or other systems supported by the IT department
  • Provides technical support to internal constituents
  • Stays current with emerging trends
  • Provides Linux Workstation Environment configuration, implementation and support
  • Builds HPC desktop Windows and Linux machines; Tier 2 and Tier 3 windows workstation environment support
  • Provides research instrumentation and workstation support configuration and maintenance
  • Provides High Performance Computing cluster configuration, implementation and support
  • Troubleshoots field hardware and software and helps users find solutions to their research technology challenges
  • Consults with users for building non-standard machines such as HPC desktops to meet their workstation needs
  • Supervises a small number of students, including coaching and mentoring, assigning tasks, approving timesheets, etc.; May make recommendations for raises for students who work directly with this position

Technical Responsibilities

  • Consult with researchers on appropriate computing system design to meet the defined need
  • Provide user support and training
  • Documentation and training, including producing documentation on system use, configuration, and procedures
  • Working with and training other group members as appropriate
  • Training end-users through seminars and presentations or responding to end-user requests for assistance
  • Answer end-user problems and questions
  • Advise and direct student workers as an integral part of the team
Minimum Qualifications

In appraising the relative qualifications of candidates for all levels, consideration will be given to the extent and type of experience with various information technology functions and to the extent and type of pertinent education and formal training.

  • Working knowledge of or proven capability to quickly learn programming language(s), operating systems, direct access techniques, remote processing and virtual systems to be utilized/supported within the hiring operating unit
  • Knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of Operating systems, networking and applications and their interoperability and the supporting infrastructure
  • Security minded and commitment to continued professional development to stay current with security best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to research, quickly identify and correct problems (debug) using system utilities / diagnostics
  • Familiarity with systems analysis procedures and techniques
  • Consult with researchers on appropriate computing system design to meet the defined need.
  • Provide user support and training.
  • Documentation and training, including producing documentation on system use, configuration, and procedures
  • Working with and training other group members as appropriate
  • Advise and direct student workers as an integral part of the team
  • Bachelor's degree in computer, electrical, or electronic engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Curiosity and tenacity for solving complex problems in disparate systems
  • Knowledge of a variety of computing hardware and research and engineering software
  • Detail oriented mindset in collection of vital details of the supported systems
  • Good customer service skills and the ability work well with a variety of users
  • Desire to solve the problem, and to improve the computing environment in the research arena with sustainable, supportable solutions
  • High standards of work deliverables
  • Ability to work and excel in a high paced, diverse team
  • Extensive knowledge (and preferably support) of Windows and Linux systems
  • Ability to learn and understand new technologies quickly

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates possessing one or more of the following qualifications will be given preference:

  • Experience with Linux Configuration Management (ie, Puppet)
  • Experience with multi-system integration
  • Familiarity and experience working with the following software and operating systems:
  • Data collection tools
  • Various engineering software (Matlab, Abacus, Ansys, Solidworks, etc)
  • Various versions of Windows
  • Linux (Debian, Redhat)
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $52,223-$83,304 annually.


Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
