Student Design & Experiential Learning

Job Description

This position oversees the daily operations of the student design and fabrication shop, ensuring safety and well-maintained workspace that supports hands-on experiential learning. By providing guidance on equipment usage, safety protocols, and fabrications best practices to minimize risk, this enhances students' technical skill and project based learning. Additionally, by fostering a supportive environment for student design teams, the position contributes to retention and persistent efforts, helping students stay engaged through experiential learning opportunities.

Equipment Management

  • Oversee daily operations, troubleshooting, and maintenance of CNC machines, waterjets, milling machines, lathes, and other fabrication equipment
  • Perform repairs, including full disassembly/reassembly and follow-up testing, ensuring proper functionality
  • Conduct routine cleaning, lubrication, and adjustments to maintain safe and efficient equipment operation
  • Maintain an inventory of critical replacement parts, consumables, PPE, and machining materials
  • Oversee software management for facility access, equipment operation, and student use tracking
  • Manage gifts-in-kind, material procurement, equipment recycling, surplus, and disposal
  • Responsible for waterjet maintenance and billing

Safety, Training & Compliance

  • Develop, maintain, and deliver safety training (both online and in-person) for students, faculty, and staff
  • Demonstrate proper machine operations and provide hands-on coaching to reinforce best practices
  • Observe and assess students for understanding, adherence to protocols, and effective equipment use
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with OSHA, EHS, and university policies, staying updated on new regulations
  • Collaborate with S&T Environmental Health Services on hazardous material storage, disposal, and safety reporting
  • Maintain detailed safety and training records, documenting student progress and facility access readiness

Student & Team Support

  • Train, mentor, and coach students in safe and effective manufacturing processes
  • Assist design teams with technical guidance, fabrication techniques, and project execution
  • Coach students through complex part design, machining, and troubleshooting issues
  • Provide leadership development and project management coaching within the facility
  • Set daily priorities and allocate shared resources, balancing operational objectives and competing team needs
  • Travel with student design teams to competitions, field tests, and outreach events, ensuring safe operations and technical support

Fleet & Logistics Management

  • Oversee maintenance, compliance, and operational readiness of the Design Center vehicle fleet, including trailers, WEX fuel card management, and GPA tracking software
  • Track vehicle mileage, report annual equipment status, and manage depreciation records
  • Coordinate team travel logistics for competitions, testing, and events, ensuring compliance with university travel policies
  • Update and distribute vehicle operation, insurance, and fleet accessibility guidelines
  • Ensure teams travel safely by monitoring GPS tracking and enforcing best practices

Operational Efficiency & Planning

  • Ensure compliance with 5S standards in daily shop operations
  • Provide input on long-term facility upgrades, safety improvements, and budget planning
  • Manage student workers' shop tasks to uphold safety, efficiency, and organization
  • Track expenses, process financial reports, and submit receipts per university guidelines

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years leading technical projects and teams
  • 2 years CNC operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Expertise in machine operations, repair, and safety training
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EHS, and DOT compliance
  • Experience mentoring and training students in technical skills
  • Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and record-keeping skills
  • Experience in logistics or fleet management
  • 3 years machinist experience

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $52,223-$73,008 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
