The Academic Advisor advises undecided, high risk, new freshmen, undecided transfer students, and other special student populations; serves as a unit liaison for registration days or similar functions.

- Advises undecided, high risk, new freshmen, undecided transfer students, and other special populations.
- Monitors and advises students to ensure satisfactory grades and GPA requirements, students understand academic policies, as well as course planning/registration.
- Develops workshops for a variety of student groups; prepares and makes presentations for Registration Days, Griffon Edge and other on –campus groups.
- Maintains professional contacts and an awareness of best practices and standards in the advising field; stays current with relevant research.
- Stays abreast of changing institutional information including new programs, course changes, important dates, costs, and updates in university-wide initiatives and policies.
- Understands the institution’s interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.
- Available to meet with students in person or virtually via Zoom throughout the year, through scheduled 1-on-1 appointments, group advising sessions, or drop-in advising.
- Establishes and maintains ongoing contact with students through a variety of communication methods, including telephone, email, Zoom, and social media platforms.
- Advises during new student registration programs.
- Documents advisement on Goldlink, Schedule Planner, and Griffon GPS.
- Serves on campus committees, as needed.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of advising theory and best practices in academic advisement
- Understands the challenges of entering freshman and transfer students and effective retention strategies
- Teaching techniques and strategies
- Effective advising techniques with special populations
- Ability to research and write reports
- Strong organizational skills (maintaining accurate files), and communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to work collaboratively with campus constituents
- Computer application skills
- Knowledge of Banner preferred
- Knowledge of Schedule Planner, Griffon GPS, and Goldlink preferred
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Previous experience involving student contact in a student services role
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Education, Advising or related field
- Two years postsecondary education advisement experience
