Missouri Western State University seeks highly qualified candidates to serve as the Director of Athletic Bands. This is a full-time, 12-month position reporting to the Director of Athletics or his/her designee.
The Director of Athletic Bands is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Athletic Band program, including but not limited to, recruiting, scheduling, drill and music selection, rehearsal, performances, monitoring academic progress, managing student staff, and fundraising for the Golden Griffon marching band and pep bands. The Director will build on Missouri Western State University’s successful recruitment strategies to attract and retain athletic band students through outreach, creative programming, establishing and maintaining traditions, and excellence in teaching.
The successful candidate will work with the Director of Athletics and the Assistant Director of Athletics for Home Events to advance the athletic band programs, and to strengthen relationships with alumni and professional associations. The Director of Athletic Bands is required to abide by rules and regulations established by Missouri Western State University, the MIAA, and the NCAA.
Essential Duties
- Direct all aspects of leading a dynamic Athletic Band program with an emphasis on developing a style of marching, sustaining high quality fundamentals, curating a high standard of music performance, and recruiting/retention.
- Directing the marching band, basketball pep band, organizing the annual Tournament of Champions marching competition, and Homecoming/Parade Band events.
- Recruit in accordance with university and departmental policies and procedures.
- Budget management, fundraising, and development of alumni relations.
- Tracking the admissions and eligibility process involving recruited students.
- Responsible for complying with the rules and regulations of the NCAA as it relates to the program.
- Supporting the academic and personal development of students in the Athletic Band program.
- Be a visible, fully integrated member of the University community.
- Represent the Athletic department, the University and the Athletic Band program in a professional manner.
- Structure experiences and work with students to develop musical, leadership, and critical thinking skills that help them advance professionally, academically, and personally.
- Work in and with community alumni, stakeholders, and organizations.
- Develop and maintain relationships with marching band professionals and organizations regionally and within the state.
- Partner with faculty and University departments in recruiting efforts.
- Provide mentoring and support related to the development and progress of students and be accessible to students outside the classroom.
- Engage in community engagement and community service activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Music Education or Instrumental Conducting required.
- Experience in Marching Band leadership to include, but not limited to, recruiting/retention, development and fundraising.
- A valid driver’s license.
- 1st Aid/CPR/AED training required.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate (DMA, PhD, EdD) in Music Education / Instrumental Conducting preferred.
- Drill writing experience preferred.
- Experience composing and/or arranging music for athletic bands preferred.
- Experience in show design preferred.
- Experience, training, and/or certification in working with students with exceptional abilities preferred.
Physical Demands
- General office conditions. Exposed to moderate noise levels.
- May occasionally be exposed to inclement weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
- Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- Required to use close vision and be able to focus.
- Regularly required to talk and hear; frequently required to sit, stand, and bend at the knee and waist, and walk.
- Must be able to have repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement to type and work on computer.
- Must have finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination to work on computer, telephone, and related office equipment.
