Position Overview:


MIT Investment Management Company (MITIMCo) is a department within MIT that currently manages over $30 billion in financial assets for the Institute’s endowment, retirement plan, and other capital pools. Our mission is to deliver outstanding long-term investment returns for MIT, and our work directly furthers the transformative research and educational efforts of this world class institution.


The Senior Analyst position is part of the Investment Accounting & Operations (IAO) team. In this role, the position will collaborate with MITIMCo operations, investment, and real estate professionals, serving as a key contributor to the IAO team in the successful implementation of investment strategies while devising and maintaining the control framework to safeguard MIT’s investments. This is a highly impactful role within the IAO team, serving as a member of the group responsible for administering trading strategies, managing investment lifecycle events, treasury/cash management, and maintaining the firm’s records of investments. As a Senior Analyst, it is expected the position will apply critical thinking skills in analyzing facts objectively to frame problem statements and devise solutions, assist with the implementation of process improvements, and lead by example. The Senior Analyst’s contributions will be crucial to the team’s ability to successfully accomplish the challenging and complex investment strategy implementations, trading responsibilities, and control environment overseen by IAO.


Principle Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Oversee fund administrator’s operations including daily resolution of cash and trade breaks and assist in the month-end close process.
  • Directly support the on/off-boarding process related to the managers, investments, and other service providers associated with MITIMCo’s investment activity through active participation on the firm’s Investment Implementation Committee, calculation of investment allocations in accordance with defined policies, and the capture of data into key systems.
  • Lead the data capture and information maintenance processes associated with maintaining the integrity of the firm’s records of investments (e.g. accounting), playing a key role with process development and system functionality implementations to support such efforts.
  • Support the daily treasury and cash management activities related to external investments, banking relationships, and cash management through the capture of all cash wire activity; monitor and reconcile cash balances, assist with the forecasting of cash flows and projections to meet investment needs; address any overdrafts or rebalancing needs.
  • Consistently and accurately adhere to established policies and procedures. Ensure adequate and up to date documentation of all processes and procedures. Immediately escalate a potential liability or an identified process or control gap.
  • Follow established policies and procedures to execute trades in accordance with funding, liquidation and repatriation needs across equities, foreign exchange, and other securities; manage settlements, resolving any discrepancies or breaks. Capture trades into the firm’s position management system; monitor currency requirements and in-kind distribution notices.
  • Directly support the team’s oversight and engagement with the service providers that enable MITIMCo’s investment activity. These entities include Investment Managers, Fund Administrators, Prime Brokers, ISDA Counterparties, Custodians, Banks, etc.
  • Participate and drive rigorous-cross training at regular intervals to enhance the breadth of understanding across the group and reduce key person risk to ensure business continuity.
  • Demonstrates accountability and ownership of work, ensuring all work is completed timely and accurately, while helping more junior employees to do the same.
  • Participates in shared coverage for key/critical IAO functions during holidays and other office closures for MITIMCo.

Qualifications* & Skills**:


  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3 years’ relevant professional experience required; experience in Investment Operations, Middle Office, Fund Accounting, or similar discipline strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of financial instruments, including equity and derivative instruments, as well as private fund investments.
  • Investment/fund accounting experience is strongly preferred.
  • CPA or actively pursuing CPA certification is a plus.
  • Prior experience at a fund administrator or overseeing fund admin operations a plus.
  • Prior Hedge Fund/Private Equity accounting and/or operations experience a plus.
  • Experience working with accounting or investment management systems a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Power Point) required.
  • Curiosity and aptitude to learn about investment operations.
  • Strong analytical skills and a detail-oriented mindset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity, exercise independent judgement, demonstrate initiative, and work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work from our Cambridge, MA, offices at least two days per week and/or as required by company policy.
