Associate Staff - Quantum Optics Engineer

MIT Lincoln Laboratory
Lexington, MA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/9/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/8/2025

The  Optical and Quantum Communications Group  develops impactful classical and quantum technologies and system prototypes for use in a wide range of challenging environments including terrestrial, space and underwater applications.  Primary areas of research include the development of novel entangled-photon source technologies; sensitive, single-photon receivers; multi-format modems; robust and compact optical beam directors; precision beam pointing, link acquisition and tracking systems; and novel modulation and coding approaches. The group is leveraging these technologies for use in prototype systems that are deployed in the field to inform next-generation classical and quantum optical system capabilities.  Examples of near-term field tests include terabit-per-second direct-to-Earth small-satellite constellations, near-Earth wideband relay laser communication terminal hardware, and next-generation beam-director prototypes inherently scalable to deep-space systems. The group is also working to enable new mission areas including extended-range and -utility undersea communications and entanglement-based quantum communication networks.

Job Description :

The group is seeking a staff research engineer to support programs targeting development of entanglement-based quantum communication network technologies.  The successful candidate should be familiar with quantum optics and quantum optical laboratory experimental apparatus, including for example :   spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) entanglement source, single-photon detector and Bell-state measurement technologies.  Experience with fiber-optic, integrated photonics and free-space optical transmission channels is desirable.  Quantum memory (with a photonic interface) is another critical technology for extending quantum network testbed demonstrations to fielded system applications.  It is also desirable for the successful candidate to be experienced in quantum memory technology development, including for example :   diamond defect-center based memories with Nitrogen or Silicon vacancies.

Qualifications :

Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics with experience in quantum optics. Experience in some or all of the following areas is also desired :  photon and / or electron entanglement generation / measurement techniques, quantum unitary operation gates and quantum memory technology.  Ability to work collaboratively, good communication skills and attention to detail is required.
