MIT Lincoln Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) which conducts groundbreaking R&D to solve problems that are critical not only to national security, but to the advancement of science itself. The Optical Engineering Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory develops and prototypes novel, one-of-a-kind optical systems for terrestrial, airborne and space borne missions of national importance. Recently the Group has been involved in optical payload development efforts for satellite imaging systems, space and ground laser communications systems, airborne laser imaging and spectroscopic systems, and high energy laser optical systems. The Group has a rich history of developing and demonstrating innovative optical solutions to achieve enhanced capability and performance for complex systems operating under various challenging conditions. This includes compact, extremely wide field-of-view space telescopes; ultra-compact, freeform optics-based cameras for ubiquitous operation; and fiber encapsulated ultra-small optical imaging systems. The efforts have led to multiple fielded systems, peer-reviewed publications, patents and innovation awards. The Group consists of more than 30 professionals with diverse expertise and skill sets covering concept development through detailed design, analysis, assembly, alignment, and comprehensive testing.

Position Description

We are seeking candidates for Optical Specialist role in the group who are comfortable working with optical hardware and / or test equipment, enjoy working in teams, and are eager to learn in a creative and experiential manner.

In the Optical Specialist role, you will work together with optical engineering personnel but have the ability to work independently when needed. You will be involved in one or more of the following areas tasked by and working closely with senior optical engineers in a team environment : engineering research, design, analytical tasks, and optical system alignments & testing, supporting a broad range of novel optical programs. You will receive ample resources for learning and mentorship to further your knowledge and skills development in these various areas.  As you grow as an Optical Specialist you will eventually be responsible for operating highly sophisticated technical apparatus and instruments in various labs.   Lincoln Laboratory offers abundant opportunities and resources, as well as a collaborative work environment across many disciplines.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree or higher in Optical Technology field, or 4 years of relevant optical experience
  • Experience assembling, bonding, aligning, and testing refractive, reflective, and / or fiber optical components and systems
  • Demonstrated skill and good performance assembling optical systems with high-precision tolerances
  • Ability to understand and operate technical optical assembly and metrology equipment
  • Experience with optical alignment instrumentation including interferometers, autocollimators, alignment telescopes, theodolites, profilometers, and / or wavefront sensors
  • Has a broad understanding of optical fabrication techniques
  • Capable of performing incoming inspection on a variety of procured optical components and has an extensive knowledge of optical fabrication specifications and safe optics handling procedures
  • Willingness to learn new skills

Experience in one or more of the following areas is desired

  • Precision lens centering (such as Opto-Alignment or Tri-Optics lens centering stations)
  • Laser beam alignment, measurement, and laser safety
  • Designing and building test fixtures to aid with optical alignment and / or metrology
  • Optical metrology techniques for freeform optical surfaces
