Mitchell Hamline School of Law is seeking to hire a full-time Senior Career Advisor. The Senior Career Advisor is responsible for creating and executing large-scale initiatives to ensure career success for our law students, as well as leading strategies and initiatives for students and alumni seeking jobs in a variety of areas, including law firms, public interest firms, government and JD Advantage.

Essential Responsibilities:

Career Counseling and Advising

  • Provide support and one-on-one counseling to law students and alumni regarding their career development and job search strategies. Assist with understanding and navigating the traditional legal and JD Advantage job market by staying up to date with the latest trends and developments in these industries to provide accurate and relevant advice to students and alumni.
  • Partner with students to develop job search strategies, polish application materials, develop and practice interview skills, formulate negotiation strategy and provide overall job application support.
  • Develop and maintain career related resources and materials, such as tip sheets, job postings, and networking opportunities. Create and manage tools for alumni and students with more complex advising needs.
  • Work with Director to advise recent graduates still seeking employment and document information for data reporting.
  • Provide specialized advising and programming to students with more complex career concerns.
  • Ensure proficient use and optimization of 12twenty career software to manage, communicate and update student and alumni career records and progress. Track and report on student and alumni employment outcomes.
  • Partner with the program administrator to optimize software workflows and ensure adherence to established processes across the program.
  • Generate and analyze reports to provide data-driven insights and recommend improvements to leadership for enhancing strategic planning and service delivery.
  • Provide input, evaluate, and make recommendations regarding the effectiveness of career counseling processes, programs, and services.

Caseload Outreach

  • Engage in regular outreach with caseload to make students aware of opportunities and career development timelines.
  • Track and document interactions with caseload and record students' experiential learning and employment opportunities, both during law school and post-graduation.
  • Organize and conduct workshops and information sessions on career-related topics, such as job search techniques, resume writing, and interview skills, to enhance the professional skillset of students and prepare them for the competitive job market.
  • Provide guidance to students seeking experiential learning opportunities.
  • In conjunction with Alumni Relations, facilitate alumni networking and mentorship opportunities for current students and share information regarding alumni engagement. Build and maintain relationships with alumni.
  • Oversee and coordinate outreach to students through direct emails and regular newsletters.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with student organizations to share relevant information and resources.
  • Create student programming responsive to student needs and oversee execution of same.

Employer Outreach

  • Stay informed on open employment opportunities in order to present information to applicants. Build and maintain relationships with potential employers.
  • Advise students regarding experiential learning opportunities, including identifying and approaching potential host sites.
  • Coordinate with externship hosts to conduct externship vetting in a timely manner, communicate with externship coordinator, and maintain externship records.
  • Seek information from potential employers on career opportunities in order to advise students applicants.
  • Identify past externship host sites and coordinate with externship supervisor as needed to facilitate additional externship opportunities.

Leadership

  • Mentor and coach peers regarding application materials review and current market trends in hiring practices.
  • Engage with MHSL faculty to share information regarding department services and events. Facilitate events and programs.
  • Serve as resource to Career Advisors on strategies and resources to enhance advising.
  • Identify student needs and areas for improvement in advising, resources, and programming. Create a strategy to strengthen offerings in these areas and help develop consistent advising skills across the department.
  • Engage in departmental planning and strategic initiatives.

Education:

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education or related field
  • Preferred: Juris Doctor

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience in recruitment, counseling or advising, preferably within a law school or other educational setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated skills in career development advising.

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially those in the areas of collaboration, conflict resolution, problem solving and decision making; strong organization and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and constituents.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student and alumni population.
  • Ability to work well without close supervision.
  • Strong general written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends as required.

Salary range: $58,190 - $81,465 Annually

  • Flexible work schedule, following the initial training period there is the opportunity to work remotely 1-2 days per week, this is dependent on needs of the department/school.
