What are the responsibilities and job description for the Elementary Counselor position at Mitchell Public Schools?
Due to retirement, Mitchell Public Schools is seeking an Elementary Counselor for the 2025-2026 School year. This position includes the ability to work with a wide range of students as the counselor is actively involved with all students, Kindergarten through 6th grade. Daily activities include lessons with students in large groups, small groups or individual settings. This position includes being actively involved in the daily lives of students such as greeting them in the morning, supervising some of their unstructured times, etc. MES is seeking a strong candidate with empathy, strong communication skills, and the ability to handle a wide range of responsibilities.
The Counselor position is unique in that a certificated teacher may work towards the Counselor endorsement while performing the role. Completion of the program and ability to obtain a valid Nebraska teaching endorsement in Counseling must occur within six years of hire. Six hours of instruction from an approved institution must be reported to the state department on an annual basis.
Mitchell recognizes and rewards all years and documented educational experience. Additional benefits include a flat salary (in lieu of insurance) of $19,000. Certificated employees may also take advantage of the district compensation of 1/2 of a single BCBS health insurance plan ($650 deductible) if wanting to utilize the school's insurance offering. 10 Flex days are provided annually with a 184-day teacher contract. MPS students attend school 4.5 days per week with a 12:30 dismissal on Fridays, staff attends until 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. on a rotating basis. 3:00 Outs are used for staff development.
