SUMMARY:
The Power Congestion Trading Analyst is a professional responsible for analyzing and managing congestion risk in power markets. This role primarily involves monitoring power transmission systems and electricity grid congestion, assessing market conditions, and trading in electricity markets to capitalize on or mitigate congestion-related risks. The analyst's work is vital for ensuring the efficient movement of electricity across regions and for helping trading firms, utilities, and energy companies navigate power grid bottlenecks and price fluctuations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitor and analyze congestion on power transmission lines, especially during peak demand periods or adverse weather conditions.
- Use market data and transmission system information to forecast congestion patterns and potential pricing discrepancies across different locations.
- Develop strategies to manage congestion risks by participating in congestion management markets or trading mechanisms.
- Continuously analyze electricity market prices, demand, supply, and grid conditions to identify congestion-related trends.
- Track changes in transmission capacity, system upgrades, and planned maintenance activities that may affect congestion.
- Collaborate with other analysts and traders to forecast short-term and long-term power price movements, with an emphasis on regional price differences.
- Work with the trading team to develop and adjust positions based on market conditions, weather events, and infrastructure changes.
- Analyze historical data and real-time data from energy markets and transmission systems to evaluate congestion patterns and forecast future risks.
- Develop models to assess potential price volatility resulting from congestion and guide trading strategies.
- Prepare reports for senior management or clients, providing insights on market conditions, potential risks, and opportunities.
- Work closely with other teams, such as power traders, market analysts, and risk management teams, to ensure an integrated approach to market strategies.
- Coordinate with grid operators, utilities, and other external parties to stay informed about system conditions and regulations.
- Stay updated on the latest regulations, rules, and market mechanisms related to congestion management and trading.
- Ensure that trading activities comply with all relevant regulations and market rules, including regional transmission organization (RTO) or independent system operator (ISO) guidelines.
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Proficiency in data analysis and energy market software tools (Dayzer, Powerworld, etc.) and statistical modeling.
- Understanding of power grid operations and the mechanics of transmission congestion.
- Strong analytical and quantitative abilities.
- Attention to detail and ability to work with complex data sets.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle high-stakes decision-making in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills for reporting findings and collaborating with teams.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- A bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Economics, Finance, or a related field is typically required. Advanced degrees or certifications in energy markets, finance, or analytics are often preferred.
- Experience in power trading, market analysis, or congestion management is highly beneficial. Familiarity with financial instruments like FTRs or CRRs is often required.

- Fluent verbal and written skills in English.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. Physical demands include:
- Prolonged periods of sitting and may need to routinely move around to communicate with different groups
- Occasionally work late to meet with Tokyo office
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must have a valid DL.
