Mixed Media Resources is hiring: Art Director in New York

Mixed Media Resources, LLC is seeking to hire an Art Director to design highly illustrated step-by-step, crafting, art instruction, and knitting and crochet print books for adults and children. The Art Director is ultimately responsible for seeing books through from concept to finished title in accordance with MMR’s style guidelines, budgets, and timelines. This position is based in our New York office with a hybrid office / work from home schedule.

Mixed Media Resources is an affiliate of Soho Publishing. The Art Director will design a variety of books for the imprints of MMR.

Responsibilities :

• Serve as a key member of book team to brainstorm new concepts and book ideas.
• Help to develop concept and book package including trim size, paper and cover stock, special treatments such as foil, ribbons, spot-gloss, etc.
• Creates multiple designs for the interior layout and cover of each title, to be reviewed by and with book department.
• Manages each assigned book through the design process, including layout, design, dummies as needed, final artwork, color correction, and preparing files for production.
• Lays out and designs assigned books including the commissioning of art; negotiating illustration and photo reproduction rights and cost; management of photo shoots including : hiring models, H / M, stylists; purchasing of props / backgrounds; and prepress needs for such books. Approves and traffics contractor invoices to accounting.
• Color corrects and silos art when prepress tasks are done in house.
• Traffics files and marked-up proofs to prepress company when prepress tasks are out of house.
• Ensures budget is being adhered to for assigned books and marketing materials.
• Uploads assigned books to press on schedule. Reviews press plotters along with editor.
• Packages final files of interiors and covers for archiving and uploads these files to the archive server.
• Works closely with editorial team with clear and regular communication throughout the process to ensure the creation of beautifully designed book products and corresponding marketing material.
• Ensures key Production, Marketing and Sales milestone dates are met, as well as the creation of sales materials for assigned books.
• Stays abreast of successful titles and trends to ensure we are aligned with book products resonating with consumers.
