Certified Medical Inpatient Coder Health Information: Certified Medical Inpatient CoderFull Time
Qualifications: Possession of one of the following: CCS, CCS-P, CPC or CIC.
A minimum of 2 years of experience in facility inpatient coding preferred.
Licenses: Current BLS preferred.
Requirements: Interpersonal skills including customer relations, grammar, reading and organizational skills. Computer skills are required. A preference for detailed work in assembling and checking medical records. Ability to read and interpret handwriting on patients’ medical records. Ability to scan records for completeness and/or omissions. Ability to write and number legibly. Accuracy with names and spelling alphabetical filing and with numbers for terminal digit filing and for statistical reporting. Finger and manual dexterity are required for handling records and reports. Typing and using other medical record equipment and machines. Ability to work with other personnel and governmental agencies. Read and follow a patient’s clinical course throughout the hospitalization. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute ratio, rate and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Duties Include: To thoroughly review all medical records for all diagnostic and
procedural information to substantiate the hospitalization. Assign appropriate codes in
order to maximize reimbursement for the hospital and physician. To review records for
coding issues for the physician’s educational and research topics. Additionally, he/she is
responsible for functioning well as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
