Job Summary:
The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting laboratory samples including venipuncture. Additionally, he/she is responsible for functioning well as a member of the multidisciplinary team.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
This position has an OSHA Category I level of exposure to blood and body substances. Category I tasks are all procedures or other job-related tasks involving an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or body tissues or a potential for spills or splashes with blood, body fluids or tissues. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Promptly attends work as scheduled and completes position responsibilities by following established guidelines & protocols within the appropriate time frame.
- Maintains confidentiality of the patient’s medical condition, personal problems, and medical record.
- Shows initiative in completing job responsibilities.
- Is neat, clean, and dressed according to the Dress Code Policy.
- Works cooperatively and respectfully with other personnel, showing a spirit of teamwork and cooperation.
- Demonstrates good skills in all forms of communication.
- Collects Laboratory samples including venipuncutes, collects blood in correct tubes, centrifuges specimens.
- Conducts therapeutic phlebotomy procedures.
- Enters patient data and test requisition information into hospital order-entry system.
- Prepares Specimens for referral Laboratory.
- Assists other Lab staff as directed.
- Maintains blood collection area and monitors requests and supplies.
- Works with Hospital “Monitor” system.
- Provides courier service to local healthcare providers.
- Prepares statistical and quality assurance reports.
- Performs bleeding times.
- Performs simple waived procedures, i.e., stool occult blood under supervision.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Basic computer skills required.
- Basic operation of centrifuge.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- One to three months related experience and/or training.
Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral visions, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
