Communications Specialist

County Clerk Office

Hourly Pay Range: $26.61 - $39.91

Are you looking for a rewarding and challenging opportunity to make a difference in the community? The Milwaukee County Clerk's Office is now hiring for a Communications Specialist to join a team of dedicated professionals serving the people of Milwaukee County.

Job Summary: The Communication Specialist assists the Communication Manager with their duties as they manage all aspects of communication and public relations involving the County Clerk, Board Chairwoman and their respective departments. The Communication Specialist will also perform duties involving both the Clerk's Office and the County Board that relate to information, communication and the public.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supporting the Communications Manager with limited supervision in developing all print and broadcast media communications, including press releases, media alerts, earned media coverage, press conferences, and on-line media presence.
  • Assists all Supervisors and the Clerk's Office in coordination with Graphic Designer under tight timelines with preparation and content for periodical communications, including constituent newsletters (mailers and electronic newsletters).
  • Monitors local print, radio and television media for daily dissemination of relevant press coverage to the Clerk's Office, Election Commission and the County Board. Distributes morning press clips to the County Board and other relevant parties.
  • Updates the County Clerk's, Election Commission and County Board websites and develops content for the same, this will also include social media accounts.
  • Develops and reviews talking points, statements, reports and testimony to be delivered before legislative, governmental, business and community organizations in response to media inquiries.
  • Organizes special public hearings on timely county matters and media coverage of board meetings and standing committees.
  • Functions as a public information source and provides staff support to prepare responses to public and media requests for records and assists with compliance of public meetings and open records laws, as well as record retention laws.
  • Serves as back up to Information Coordinator in running and troubleshooting meeting stream equipment as needed.
  • Assists County Clerk's Office, Election Commission and County Board in facilitating public access to government proceedings, including but not limited to committee testimony and election night results viewing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that are relevant to fulfilling the mission of the County Board, County Clerk's Office, Election Commission and Milwaukee County at large.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current resident of the State of Wisconsin.
  • Current Wisconsin Driver's License and access to a reliable insured vehicle; both maintained throughout employment.
  • Associate degree or higher degree in Marketing, Journalism, Art or in a closely related field with relevant experience.
  • At least 2 years of paid experience working in communications/marketing that included Writing, Graphics, Web Design or Social Media Management
  • This position is required to attend events and public meetings after hours and sometimes on the weekends.

Preferred Experience

  • Mac and Windows PC experience
  • Adobe CS, Microsoft Office Suite, graphic design skills
  • Proficiency in graphic design, layout, and printing techniques, strong computer and digital editing skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining confidentiality.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience working with computers, general office equipment, cameras and AV equipment
  • The ability to be assertive without being overly forceful and the ability to keep calm under pressure.
  • Strong ability to communicate with employees across departments, write routine reports, correspondence and speak effectively before both internal and external groups.
  • The ability to work well with a variety of people at various level with the ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • The ability to interpret policy and recommend course of action.
  • The ability to make decisions of responsibility, involving evaluation of information. Decisions may require development or application of alternatives or precedents.
  • The ability to deal with complex factors not easily evaluated. Decisions require considerable judgment, initiative and ingenuity in areas there is little precedent.
  • The ability to lift, carry and push pull up to 15Lbs.
