Position Overview :
The Consulting Ecologist will assist in conducting habitat assessments, preparing vegetation management plans, assisting with wetland mitigation bank plans, and monitoring restoration projects. The position will be part of MNL's Professional Services work and involves working closely with MNL ecologists and clients to assist in ecological restoration projects. The job will require some field work with careful data collection, plant identification, meeting with land managers to plan restoration, assessing success of restoration, evaluating erosion, etc. Office work will include summarizing data, reviewing off-site data, writing plans, and reports.
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Assist in conducting field surveys, assessments and collecting project-related data for analysis in planning for ecological restoration and natural resource management. This includes traversing uneven terrain and carrying equipment.
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports, vegetation management plans, and environmental field studies.
- Provide assistance in utilizing GIS data for map production.
- Assist with natural resource management assessments.
- Assist with botanical assessments of sites including native plant community classification.
- Perform assessments of restoration projects to determine seeding success, identify problematic species, and formulate recommendations for management.
- Coordinate and track management activities for specific tasks on multiple projects to ensure proper timing of herbicide applications, prescribed burns, mowing, and other vegetation management and restoration tasks.
- Evaluate erosion and effectiveness of BMPs including making recommendations for erosion control.
- Assist with preparation of wetland mitigation plans and vegetation and hydrology monitoring for wetland banks.
- Meet with clients to discuss project status, plan additional work, and communicate clearly.
- Performs other duties as assigned based on skills and interests.
