Position Overview:
The Ecological Field Technician II (FT2) is responsible for performing various job tasks involved in small to large scale ecological restoration projects. At times there will be limited on site supervision so FT2 will assume an onsite lead role directing the work of a small crew or solo guiding site activities. As an FT2 you are expected to have good time management and problem-solving skills. FT2's should have a moderate understanding of restoration ecology. An FT2 is a field position that works outside in a wide range of climate conditions with the potential of some longer days. Good communication is a must with supervisors, crew members, and customers. As a FT2 you will need to document daily activities and keep accurate records. You will need to follow and require crew members to follow all MNL processes and procedures and be an example promoting MNL core values. As and FT2 you may be responsible for leading daily tailgate safety talks to maintain a clean safe work environment. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conducts all tasks involved with successfully installing and managing small to large scale restoration projects, including but not limited to site preparation, seeding, planting, erosion control installation, vegetation management and equipment operation.
- Routinely operating truck and trailer combinations under 26,000 lbs. To include loading/securing loads, pre-trip checks, and maintaining logbook. CDL is a plus and will allow for high pay increases.
- Provide onsite field labor for restoration and management activities
- Safely and efficiently utilized basic tools such as weed whips, powered augers, hand tools, etc.
- Effectively train less experienced employees on these basic tools.
- Safely and efficiently complete a variety of restoration duties, utilizing various types of small equipment such as, chainsaws, pumps, GPS, mowers, ATV/UTVs, etc.
- Effectively train less experienced employees on various small equipment.
- Safely and efficiently operate equipment such as small tractors and skid loaders with all attachments.
- Review and execute restoration plans provided by construction manager on Trello.
- Calibrate sprayers and seeders to ensure correct rates
- Provide onsite leadership and crew guidance when charged
- Maintains work records and associated paperwork, including daily worklogs.
- Leader in morning preparation of equipment and supplies needed for the day
Duties and Responsibilities (cont'd):
- Maintains cleanliness of the Bluestem shop
- Sets a high standard of safety and customer service on and off site.
- Maintains up to date pesticide applicators license. MN & ND
- Maintains DOT health certificate
- Maintains high level customer satisfaction
- Operation of new computer software or APP's as they come online
- Maintains organization and follows structure
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- If interested, obtains commercial driver's license
Secondary Duties
- Assist other departments or locations within MNL to maintain efficiency and help to balance workloads.
- Preparing equipment for the upcoming season through the winter maintenance plan.
- Complete level I repairs and fabrication on equipment. If repair is beyond this level coordinate with site lead and/or Otsego shop to decide best avenue for repair.
- Assist on controlled burns
- Learns the "bigger picture" of MNL that can be translated to coworkers and the public.
- Follow and help develop training protocol to maintain a safe work environment.
- Continue professional development; potentially obtaining valuable certifications and gaining a higher understanding of "smart" ecological practices.
- Be an ambassador for MNL by living and promoting our core values of passion, grit, craftsmanship, innovation, and positivity.
