MobilizeGreen seeks conservation-minded Climate Adaptation Fellows focused on hydrology at the Region 7 Regional Office in Kenai, AK to support efforts to adapt to climate change, restore habitat, and ensure sustainable water resource management on National Wildlife Refuge System lands. As a fellow, you will develop case studies, communication materials, intranet content, and other shared learning materials to promote the operationalization of climate action. You also will prepare briefing materials, explore innovative approaches to communicating the Service’s climate success stories, and engage with project teams to support the feasibility, design, and delivery of priority climate projects across the Service.
This opportunity is designed for early-career professionals interested in climate resilience, hydrology, and geomorphology, focusing on habitat restoration, nature- based solutions, and water systems. Fellows will assist with climate-smart conservation projects, hydrologic and geomorphologic data collection and analysis, stakeholder collaboration, and development of communication tools.This position provides a unique opportunity to collaborate with multiple USFWS programs, including Refuges, Ecological Services, Fisheries, Coastal Program, and Partners for Fish and Wildlife.

Position Duties:

Climate Adaptation
- Applying climate-smart tools to assess conservation and restoration opportunities.
- Facilitating cross-programmatic coordination to advance implementation of priority climate projects.
- Developing case studies, shared learning tools, and communication materials to promote climate adaptation.
- Preparing briefing materials and communicating the Service’s climate success stories through innovative approaches.
- Supporting feasibility, design, and delivery of priority climate projects in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Hydrology
- Measuring streamflow, water levels, water quality, and other aquatic habitat attributes.
- Installing and maintaining hydrologic monitoring equipment (e.g., staff gages, shallow groundwater wells, and water level recorders).
- Conducting topographic and bathymetric surveys using Real-Time Kinematic GPS (RTK GPS).
- Water monitoring and mapping hydrology features and water management infrastructure using GPS and satellite imagery.5. Inventorying and cataloging the condition of water management infrastructure
Learning Goals:
- Understand how to integrate climate adaptation into planning, guidance, and policy for wildlife conservation.
- Learn methods to create and share climate-related materials, including case studies and success stories, tailored to diverse audiences.
- Build professional networks across USFWS, including managers, scientists, conservation professionals, and partners.
- Experience cross-programmatic collaboration and project management.
- Gain experience working with various stakeholders, including States, Tribes, NGOs, local governments, and private citizens.
- Gain skills in hydrology, geomorphology, and climate adaptation science, including data collection, analysis, and project design.
- Develop expertise in surface water and groundwater monitoring, land surveying, and water quality assessment using standard techniques.
Qualifications/Skills and Knowledge:
Required
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental science, natural resources, climate science, hydrology, geoscience, biology, or related fields.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Effective communication, teamwork, and ability to work independently.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions and conduct physical tasks.
- Ages 18-30 (or up to 35 for veterans).
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of hydrologic monitoring and land surveying techniques (e.g., RTK GPS, total stations).
- Experience with GIS, data analysis, and nature-based climate solutions.
- Familiarity with public lands management and environmental policy.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to develop case studies, learning tools, and success stories to communicate science effectively.
- A desire to help drive the Service’s climate adaptation and mitigation responses collaboratively and at all levels.
- Experience setting an agenda, goals for a portfolio of work as well as guiding disparate interests to achieving specific goals.
- Strong interpersonal, communications (oral and written), and organizational skills.
- Ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources to identify core issues and translate them to action.
Additional Requirements:
- Physical Requirements: The work involves both office and field work and ranges from sedentary to strenuous. Field work requires physical exertion such as walking over wet and rough surfaces or through aquatic habitats, such as streams, marshes, or mud flats, and operation of watercraft and off-road vehicles. Member should be comfortable carrying 10-20lb equipment through similar conditions, as well as bending, crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching. Field work can take place in a variety of weather conditions, including both cold and warm temperatures. Hand and finger dexterity and physical coordination may involve fine and precise procedures, delicate adjustments or exact measurements.
- Position Environment: Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors. Temperature and weather extremes can be encountered in the performance of outdoor duties. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff members or resources.
