The Development Manager is responsible for driving fundraising efforts, cultivating donor relationships, and developing strategies to ensure the financial sustainability of the organization. This role involves managing fundraising campaigns, writing grant proposals, coordinating events, and engaging with individual, corporate, and foundation donors. The Development Manager works closely with the executive team to set fundraising goals, maintain donor databases, and develop communication materials to enhance donor engagement and retention.

Responsibilities

Donor Relations and Fundraising

Build and maintain strong relationships with existing donors, ensuring regular communication and personalized updates.

Develop a donor stewardship program, including thank-you notes, calls, and donor appreciation events.

Identify potential major donors and create engagement strategies.

Data Management and Analytics

Manage the donor database to ensure accurate records of donations, communications, and grants.

Analyze fundraising data to identify trends and opportunities for increased revenue.

Generate detailed reports to help inform strategic decision-making.

Grants Management

Identify, research, and evaluate grant opportunities aligned with organizational priorities.

Develop and submit compelling grant proposals, including narratives, budgets, and required documentation.

Monitor awarded grants to ensure compliance with funder requirements, including tracking deliverables and expenditures.

Prepare and submit progress reports, financial updates, and final outcomes to funders.

Build and maintain relationships with grantors to support ongoing funding opportunities.

Event Planning and Execution

Support or lead the planning and execution of fundraising events, such as galas, campaigns, and community engagement activities.

Partner with the Programs team to integrate mission-focused messaging into events.

Communications and Marketing

Work with the marketing team to align fundraising campaigns with social media and other communications.

Draft compelling impact stories and newsletters for donors and stakeholders.

Develop marketing materials that highlight the organization’s achievements and funding needs6. Administrative Support for the CEO

Assist with scheduling and preparation for donor and stakeholder meetings.

Provide logistical support for presentations, including research and slide deck creation.

Draft correspondence or proposals for key funders and partners.

Advocacy and Community Engagement

Represent the organization at community events, funder meetings, and advocacy initiatives.

Strengthen partnerships with local businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits to build a stronger support network.

Organizational Development and Capacity Building

Research and recommend strategies for organizational growth, including potential partnerships or new revenue streams.

Help establish systems and processes for smoother operations, such as developing a calendar for grant deadlines, donor communications, and reports.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or 5 years experience in fundraising, development or similar role

Charitable registration solicitation

5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, development, or a related role.

3 years of experience in grant writing

Proven track record of successful grant writing and securing donations from individual, corporate, and foundation donors.

Experience planning and executing fundraising events.

Familiarity with donor management software (e.g., Donor Box, Bloomerang, DonorPerfect) and CRM systems.

Knowledge of fundraising best practices, donor cultivation, and stewardship strategies.

Experience with marketing and communication tools for fundraising campaigns is preferred.

Knowledge

Familiarity with the Maryland nonprofit landscape, particularly funding opportunities and community dynamics.

Understanding of and experience working with TLGBQIA communities , demonstrating cultural competence and commitment to equity and inclusion.

Knowledge of the DMV region and Montgomery County nonprofit ecosystems is highly desirable.

Awareness of local challenges and opportunities, as well as established relationships with community stakeholders, is a plus.
